Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), also called Son Sant Joan, is the main gateway to the whole island, and a hire car is what lets you use it. The drive from the airport to Soller takes about 40 minutes, and Palma to Pollenca around 50 minutes - distances a bus timetable handles badly.
PMI runs on a single passenger terminal, so there is no terminal to choose between at pickup. It is divided into four sections: Terminal A for non-Schengen flights such as the UK, B mainly for inter-island flights, C the largest serving mostly Schengen flights, and D a mix of both. Whichever module you land at, the rental desks are in the same arrivals hall, so follow the signs and you will reach them.
The car rental offices are next to the arrivals hall in the passenger terminal, on the ground floor. Once you have booked, you head to the car hire parking area in the General parking building, on levels 0 and 1, directly opposite the passenger terminal. Free parking is available for picking up and dropping off, but you must return the car to your company's assigned area - leave it in a public bay and normal parking charges may apply.
Some suppliers keep their cars off-site and run a free shuttle instead. The branch is off-site, with a courtesy shuttle bus from the Transport Meeting Point parking lot - on arrival you turn left in the arrivals hall, follow the Transport Meeting Point sign and exit through door 6. Your voucher tells you exactly which applies to your booking, so read it before you land.

Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport, driving licence and the booking card ready at the desk to keep the queue short after a long flight. Drivers must be 21 to rent in Spain, and those under 25 may pay a young-driver fee. Many desks at PMI open all day, but hours vary by supplier, so if you land late check the closing time before you book - some charge an out-of-hours fee for a pickup outside business hours. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them, including the fuel gauge, before you drive off.
The airport sits right on the Levante motorway, so you are moving within minutes - PMI is just 8 km from the Palma city centre, about a 20-minute drive. For the north and east of the island you can join the motorway straight from the airport and skip Palma altogether.
When you return, fuel up before the airport as on-site prices are higher, then follow the "car hire return" or "rental car return" signs back to your supplier's area in the same car park. If you return outside business hours, most suppliers provide a key drop box for the keys. Photograph the car and the fuel gauge again on an after-hours return so you have proof of its condition.
Low-emission zone - no issue for rentals
Palma is rolling out a low-emission zone (ZBE) in the city, with camera enforcement and fines for non-compliant cars. A car hired at PMI is not affected: cars rented in Spain already carry the DGT environmental sticker the zone requires, so a rental can drive into Palma with no extra paperwork. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not yours. Check the windscreen for the sticker at pickup and photograph it.

In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
