Ávila is a medieval walled city 110 kilometres northwest of Madrid, encircled by the most complete Romanesque walls in Spain — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At over 1,100 metres above sea level, it is one of the highest provincial capitals in Europe, with cold winters and mild summers that make it a popular escape from Madrid's heat. A rental car is the best way to explore Ávila alongside Salamanca, Segovia, and the Sierra de Gredos mountains. Madrid Airport is about one hour and 20 minutes away.

The A-6 motorway connects Ávila to Madrid in about one hour. Salamanca is one hour west on the A-50. Segovia is under one hour northeast on the N-110. Petrol stations on the A-6 approach roads and in the city outskirts.
