La Romana is a small inland town in the Vinalopó valley of southern Alicante province, surrounded by the dry sierra landscape characteristic of the interior Costa Blanca. The town is a quiet base in the agricultural heartland between Alicante and Murcia, with the marble-quarrying village of Novelda and its extraordinary Modernista sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena 10 minutes north. Elche and its UNESCO palm grove are 25 minutes northeast, Alicante Airport is 30 minutes northeast, and the salt lakes of Torrevieja are 35 minutes southeast. The area is known for its marble and wine production.
