Fuerteventura is the second-largest of the Canary Islands, and its beaches and villages are spread far apart. Distances can be quite extensive, which is why hiring a car is practically essential if you want to make the most of your days on the island. Bus services run, but they tie you to fixed times. The real value of car rental in Fuerteventura is reaching El Cotillo, Ajuy or the inland mountains on your own schedule.
The island is built for driving. The main roads are the FV-1 (Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo) and FV-2 (Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable), the roads are in good condition in most parts, and because Fuerteventura is much flatter than the western islands, the roads are not as winding as in Tenerife or Gran Canaria. The one stretch to take slowly is where the FV-1 crosses the Corralejo dunes.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The two main resorts sit at opposite ends of the island, and the FV-2 connects them. Caleta de Fuste to Corralejo is about 43 km, around 40 minutes. Corralejo to Jandia takes roughly 140 minutes driving within the limits, which range from 50 kph around the resorts up to 110 kph on the motorway in the south.
Inland, the run through Betancuria and the Mirador de Morro Velosa is the classic loop. From Pajara you head to Betancuria, then the Mirador de Morro Velosa, then the FV-416 road on to Antigua. The black-sand beach and sea caves at Ajuy are a short detour off the same route.
Where people drive on the island
Tarmac only - the off-road rule
Standard hire cars in Fuerteventura are insured for paved roads only. Cars are not insured for driving on unpaved roads like the road to Cofete. That beach is worth seeing, but read your terms before you take a car down the track - a breakdown or scratch there is on you. The same goes for the last few hundred metres of dirt at some smaller beaches.
Most car hire in Fuerteventura starts at the airport, where the choice and the cheapest rates are. Car rental is also available at the port and the main seaside resorts: Morro Jable, Costa Calma, Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo. A resort pickup saves paying for a car you are not using if you are staying put for the first few days.
One island rule to know: most suppliers do not let you take the car to another island. If you are tempted by the Corralejo-Lanzarote ferry, leave the car parked and go as a foot passenger.
Fuerteventura works year-round - it is one of the driest Canary Islands, with an average of 300 sunny days a year and very few rainy days. September and October are generally the calmest months on the island, though there is a flow of tourists throughout the year, and the busiest months are July and August. Spring and autumn give you mild driving weather and quieter roads.
Winter is also peak for the sun-seekers escaping Europe, so the resorts fill up from November to February. Whenever you come, book a few weeks ahead - most cars here are manual, you pay more for an automatic, and there are fewer of them.
Standard hire cars are insured for paved roads only, and the road to Cofete is a long, bumpy dirt track. Check your terms before you go - a breakdown or damage on an unpaved road usually is not covered.

No. Fuerteventura does not have a city low-emission zone like the mainland, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island, including Puerto del Rosario and the resorts, with no extra paperwork.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
