グラン・カナリアを一周するレンタカー比較と予約のヒント。
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Coast runs are easy motorway driving; the mountain roads up to Roque Nublo are tight and twisty. Pick by group size and how much climbing you plan.
Economy
Cheapest to run and easy to park at the southern resorts. Fine for two people on coast trips.
Automatic
Easier on the climbs to Tejeda and Roque Nublo. Automatics are limited, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with luggage room on the airport run to the south.
Luxury
A convertible suits the coast road past Puerto Rico. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Gran Canaria is small - with a diameter of 50 kilometres, it is not very large and therefore ideal to discover by car. If you stay put in one resort you can manage on the Global buses, but a hire car is what lets you reach the dunes, the fishing ports and the mountain villages on your own schedule instead of a bus timetable.
The spine of the island is the GC-1 motorway. It runs along the east coast from Las Palmas via the airport to the tourist region of Maspalomas, so getting between the capital and the southern resorts is fast and simple.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most of the island's resorts cluster on the south coast, and they are close together. From the airport, it takes 20 minutes to drive to Maspalomas, just under 30 minutes to reach Las Palmas city and around 35 minutes to get to Puerto Rico.
Where people drive on Gran Canaria
Each southern resort has its own page. The point for Gran Canaria is that one pickup reaches all of them and you are back the same day, so many visitors rent even when they base themselves in a single resort.
The coast roads are straightforward, but the routes inland are not. Some of the most beautiful roads pass through the mountains and along the coast; the GC-500 winds around the southern coast, and almost all mountainous roads have barriers, but there can be many sharp bends so concentration is essential. Take the climbs slowly and pull in at the laybys for the views.
Parking is cheap by mainland standards. Paid parking is usually less than 1 EUR for an hour, and around 6 EUR for a whole day, usually on and around the famous beaches. Blue lines on the road indicate a paid parking zone. Las Palmas is the one place where street spaces are tight, so a covered garage is often the easier choice.
One local rule catches tourists out: driving in flip-flops or with bare feet is treated seriously by police, even for tourists in rental cars. Keep a pair of proper shoes in the car.
Most car hire in Gran Canaria starts at the airport, where the desks and the cheapest rates are. For terminals, supplier desks and the arrivals walk-through, see the Gran Canaria Airport car hire page. To collect at your resort instead, there are outlets in Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico, making it easy to pick up from where you are staying. Either way, an no-deposit rate avoids a deposit hold.
The island is mild all year - winters are mild with lots of sunshine, around 21C in the day in the coldest month, February. That makes winter the busiest tourist season for sun-seekers, when automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. Spring and autumn are quieter on the roads and easier for the mountain drives. Summer is warm but not extreme, and prices for car rental in Gran Canaria are at their cheapest outside the winter peak. Whenever you come, booking ahead is where the savings are, especially for an automatic.
Yes. Leave the airport on the GC-1 Sur and follow the signs for Maspalomas. It is about 20 minutes of straightforward motorway to the southern resorts, with the resort exits clearly signposted.
No. Gran Canaria does not have a city low-emission zone like the mainland, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island, including Las Palmas and the southern resorts, with no extra paperwork.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Tenerife, Fuerteventura or other islands must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect at the airport and return in Maspalomas or Las Palmas.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, so book one early if you want it - it makes the climb up to Roque Nublo and Tejeda easier.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
