No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most trips here are a short motorway run up from the airport plus day drives along the Costa Blanca. Pick by group size and distance.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy to park at the edge of town. Fine for two on the AP-7.
Automatic
Easier on the climb up to Guadalest. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage on the airport run.
Luxury
For the coast road to Calpe in something nicer. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Benidorm is built for walking and for the tram, so you do not need a car for the Levante and Poniente beaches or the old town. The value of car rental in Benidorm is the rest of the Costa Blanca - the coves north towards Calpe, the mountain villages inland, and the towns the tram does not reach quickly. One pickup turns a beach week into a touring week.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most people fly into Alicante Airport (ALC) and drive up. It is about 58 kilometres direct from the airport to Benidorm, roughly 40 to 45 minutes by car. The usual route is the AP-7 motorway, the Autopista del Mediterraneo, which runs straight up the coast. In July and August the corridor gets busy, so a midday or weekend arrival can add time. If you want the car waiting on arrival, the desks and the cheapest rates are at the airport - see the Alicante car hire page for the airport terminal details.
The good drives here are short. Altea is about 7 miles north, roughly 14 minutes by car, with its white old town above the marina. Calpe and the Penon de Ifach rock are about 23 km, around 30 minutes up the coast. Inland, Guadalest is about 22 km and 27 minutes, the castle village in the Marina Baixa hills, often paired with the Algar waterfalls nearby. Alicante itself is under an hour south on the AP-7. Each town below has its own page.
The point for Benidorm is that you can do any of these as a morning out and be back on the beach by lunch. That is why many visitors rent here even when the hotel is their main base.
Quick day drives from Benidorm
This is the one local rule to get right, and it works differently from most Spanish cities. Benidorm's Low Emission Zone covers around 74 hectares split into three sub-zones - Centro, Levante and Paseo de Poniente - the busiest pedestrian areas, watched by number-plate cameras.
Benidorm asks you to register the plate, not just to have a clean sticker. If your vehicle does not have a DGT label you likely will not be able to drive within the zone, unless you have a hotel reservation or a temporary exemption. In practice, hotels inside the zone register your hire car's plate for you - several have an online form where you give the registration and they process the permit free of charge for your stay. Ask your accommodation to add the plate when you check in.
For most renters this is simple. Hire cars are modern and carry the DGT sticker the zone requires, so once your plate is registered you can drive in. The easiest plan is to park at the free areas on the edge of town and walk or take the tram into the centre, which avoids the question altogether.
You can collect at Alicante Airport and drive up, or pick up in Benidorm itself if you want the first few days car-free. Local names operating here include Goldcar and Centauro. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold, which matters if you are only carrying a debit card.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads and the AP-7 free-flowing. July and August are the peak: rates climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the coast road backs up, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and a car still earns its keep for the inland villages once the beach season is over.
Yes, but Benidorm's low-emission zone needs your plate registered, not just a clean sticker. Hotels inside the zone usually register your hire car's plate for free during your stay - give them the registration at check-in.
The simplest option is to park at the free areas on the edge of town and use the tram.
About 40 to 45 minutes for the 58 km, almost all on the AP-7 motorway up the coast.
In July and August, a midday or weekend arrival can take longer when the corridor is busy.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance. There may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Benidorm and return in Alicante or Valencia.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in summer, so book one early if you need it - it makes the climb up to Guadalest easier.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
