Barakaldo is a large city on the left bank of the Nervión estuary, forming part of Greater Bilbao and one of the main urban centres of the Basque Country. Once a powerhouse of the steel and shipbuilding industries, the city has transformed into a modern hub — home to the BEC Bilbao Exhibition Centre, one of the largest in Spain. Its estuary-side position gives easy access to Bilbao's Guggenheim and cultural scene, the Basque coast beaches, and the A-8 motorway linking the whole Cantabrian coast. Bilbao Airport is about 20 minutes away.
