Nerja town is compact and walkable - you can get from the Balcon de Europa to Burriana Beach in about 15 minutes on foot, and most restaurants and shops sit inside that stretch. So you do not need a car for the town itself.
Where car rental in Nerja earns its keep is everything outside the centre. Nerja has no train station and local buses run thin, so a car is what reaches Frigiliana, the Nerja Caves and the coves east towards Maro on your own schedule rather than a bus timetable.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The big draw is close. Frigiliana sits about 6 km uphill, a 10 to 15 minute drive on a winding road, and the village's old quarter is too narrow for cars - you leave the car in the parking bays on the edge and walk in. It has its own page.
Beyond that, Malaga is about 50 km west on the A-7, roughly 45 to 60 minutes, if you want a city day out. East towards Almuñecar takes around 25 minutes, and the Maro coves and the Aguila aqueduct are only a few minutes past the Nerja Caves. The point for Nerja is that one pickup covers all of these and you are back the same evening.
Rough drives from Nerja
Driving into the old town is effectively impossible - the lanes are narrow and much of it is pedestrian only, so park outside and walk. Free options include Avenida de Pescia near the main junction and the Verano Azul Park area by the supermarket, both a short walk from the centre. The underground car park under Plaza de Espana is the closest but charges around 12 to 15 EUR a day.
In July to September the free spaces fill by mid-morning. Arrive before 10am for the best chance of a spot, and watch for blue-line resident bays, which you should not use.
Nerja itself does not run a city-centre low-emission zone the way Malaga does, so there is no camera barrier to driving into town. If you do take the car into central Malaga, that city's zone applies - but a car rented in Spain carries the DGT environmental sticker the zone requires, so a hire car drives in with no extra paperwork. The fines target older, non-compliant private cars, not yours. Check the windscreen for the sticker at pickup and photograph it.
Most car hire for this trip starts at Malaga Airport (AGP), about 50 km west, where the desks and the cheapest rates are - see the Malaga page for the airport context. To collect in or near Nerja instead, suppliers serving the area include Centauro and Goldcar. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the easiest times to drive - mild weather, quieter roads and far less competition for parking than the summer peak. July and August are the busiest: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the coast road and town car parks get crowded, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and with around 320 days of sun a year a car still makes sense for the inland and coast trips out of season.
