Elche (Elx in Valencian) is one of the most remarkable cities on the Costa Blanca, home to the Palmeral — a UNESCO World Heritage palm grove of over 200,000 date palms, the largest in Europe, whose origins trace back to Moorish times. The city also stages the Mystery Play of Elche, a medieval religious drama performed in the Basilica of Santa María since the 15th century. Alicante Airport is just 15 minutes away, making Elche an excellent first stop after landing. The city centre has archaeological museum, medieval Calahorra tower, and easy access to the southern Costa Blanca beaches.

The city centre has underground car parks near the Palmeral and the Basilica. Street parking in the historic area can be limited; the blue-zone bays are paid. Several free car parks are located on the outskirts of the centre, a short walk from the main sights.
Alicante Airport is 15 minutes northeast on the A-7/AP-7. Alicante city is 25 minutes. Torrevieja is 30 minutes south. The Santa Pola beaches are 20 minutes southeast. Petrol stations on the A-7, N-340 and the Elche ring road.
