Port de Pollensa sits in a sheltered horseshoe bay at the northern tip of the island, and the resort itself is small enough to walk - the beach, the marina and the Pine Walk are all within a few minutes of each other. A hire car earns its keep the moment you want to leave the bay, because the public bus from here is built around fixed times and a single route.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The town of Pollensa is about 6 km inland, around ten minutes away, with its Sunday market and the 365 steps up to the Calvari chapel. Port de Pollensa sits roughly 65 km, or about 40 miles, north of Palma. Alcudia and its walled old town are about 11 km south around the bay, with the long sandy beaches of Playa de Muro running on from there.
The headline drive is the Ma-2210 out to Cap de Formentor, the lighthouse on the island's northern tip. The road starts in Port de Pollensa and runs for 18 kilometres to the lighthouse, with tight bends, steep slopes and tunnels carved into the rock. The first stop is the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint, about 5 km out. Read on for the summer access rule before you plan this one.
Further afield, a hire car opens up the Serra de Tramuntana coast road towards Soller and Sa Calobra, all of which sit on the wider island and have their own pages on Mallorca.
Cap de Formentor: the summer road closure
This is the one local rule to get right with a hire car. The Ma-2210 from Port de Pollensa to the Formentor lighthouse is closed to private vehicles daily from 10:00 to 22:00 over the summer, roughly mid-May to mid-October, with the exact dates set each year. The restriction applies to private vehicles, including hire cars. Enforcement is by traffic cameras on the road, and fines for unauthorised access run from 100 to 200 euros.
You have two easy options. Drive the road early - from October to the end of May the road is fully open with no restrictions - or in summer arrive before 10:00. Otherwise take TIB shuttle bus line 334, which runs from Port de Pollensa to the lighthouse through the restriction period and stops at the main viewpoints. The bus from Port de Pollensa to the lighthouse takes about 50 minutes.
Quick checks at pickup
Most visitors fly into Palma and either collect at the airport or have a car delivered locally - Port de Pollensa is around 55 minutes from Palma via the Ma-13 and Ma-2200. Check your voucher for the exact pickup point, as some local rates are handed over near your accommodation rather than at a fixed desk.
In the resort itself, parking is mostly on-street and gets tight in July and August around the seafront. There is a central bus stop in Port de Pollensa with free parking, and more free parking on the ring-road service roads - handy if you want to leave the car and take the Formentor bus on a busy day.
Spring (April and May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive here - quieter roads, warm weather, and the Formentor road open to cars again at the start and end of that window. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the bay roads get busy, so book several weeks ahead. Out of season a car still makes sense for the inland trips and the open coast road, and rates are at their cheapest.

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
