Magaluf is a compact resort. The beach, Punta Ballena and the water parks are all walkable, and the TIB buses run along the coast to Palma Nova and into Palma, so you can have a full holiday here without a car.
Where car hire in Magaluf earns its keep is the moment you want to leave the strip. The coves west of the resort, the Tramuntana mountain villages and the east-coast beaches are either poorly served by bus or not served at all, and a car turns a half-day excursion into something you do on your own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most of the southwest coast is a short drive. The nearest quiet alternative to the main beach is Cala Vinyes, about 5 minutes away by car. Portals Vells, a sheltered cove on the western tip of Palma Bay, is roughly 15 minutes through the pine woods, and the car park there fills up by mid-morning in summer.
Palma is about 25 minutes east, with underground car parks near the centre the easiest place to leave the car. Further out, Soller and the orange valley are around 45 minutes to an hour over the Ma-11, the Caves of Drach on the east coast about an hour, and Cala d'Or on the southeast roughly an hour and a quarter. Cross-island drives generally run 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and mountain roads take longer than the distance suggests because of the bends.
Quick checks at pickup
In Magaluf itself, parking is straightforward outside peak July and August. At the coves, arrive in the morning before the car parks fill, and note that some beaches like Illetes use paid blue-zone parking. In central Palma, the underground garages are far easier than hunting for a street space.
Palma has a Low Emission Zone (ZBE) covering the old town and central areas. For a hire car this rarely matters. Cars rented in Mallorca are modern and carry the DGT environmental sticker the zone requires, so a rental can drive into central Palma with no extra paperwork. The fines target older, non-compliant private or foreign-plated cars, not yours.
Most car hire for a Magaluf holiday starts at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), where the desks sit in the main arrivals hall and the choice and rates are best. Among the suppliers there is Centauro, which runs a free shuttle between its office and the terminal. There are also a handful of pickup points in the resort itself if you would rather collect locally after a day or two. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads and coves that are not yet packed. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and beach car parks fill early, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, though the resort itself is quiet then and a car makes most sense for inland day trips rather than the beach.

Yes. Central Palma is a low-emission zone, but cars rented in Mallorca carry the DGT sticker the zone requires, so a hire car can enter freely.

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
