Popular car types for Playa d'en Bossa

Most trips from here are short hops to other beaches, plus a longer run across the island. Pick by group size and where you are heading, not by looks.

Car hire in Playa d'en Bossa: is it worth it?

Playa d'en Bossa works fine without a car if you only plan to use the resort. At 2.7 kilometres long, it has the longest beach on the island, lined with bars, beach clubs and hotels, and the bus into Ibiza Town runs every half hour in summer. The strip itself is walkable end to end.

Where car rental in Playa d'en Bossa earns its keep is the rest of the island. The quiet coves and the north coast are not on a useful bus route, and a hire car turns a half-day excursion into something you can do on your own schedule.

Payment and deposit

When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Where you can drive from Playa d'en Bossa

The resort sits on the south-east coast, so most drives are short. Ibiza Town and its old quarter, Dalt Vila, are about 3 kilometres north, five to ten minutes away. The Ses Salines salt flats and their beaches are roughly 15 minutes south, and Es Cavallet is a similar distance.

Further afield, San Antonio is about 20 minutes across the island, the western coves near Cala Comte around 30 minutes, and the northern beaches like Benirras and Portinatx closer to 40 minutes. The island is 21 miles long and 12 miles wide, so you can drive from one end to the other in under an hour.

The whole of Ibiza is within reach from a single pickup here, which is why many people staying in Playa d'en Bossa rent for at least part of the week.

Parking and driving tips on the island

  • Blue painted lines mean you pay to park; yellow means you cannot park there.
  • Parking is often free during the siesta between 2pm and 4pm and late at night.
  • The strip and the club car parks fill fast on summer nights, so arrive early or use the resort's pay car parks.
  • Photograph any existing scratches before you drive off.

Low-emission zones - no problem for a hire car

Under Spain's national rules, larger municipalities are rolling out low-emission zones (ZBE), and Ibiza is on the list to introduce one. For a car hired in Playa d'en Bossa this does not matter. Every Spanish rental-fleet vehicle already carries the correct DGT environmental label, so the category is assigned automatically - just check the windscreen before you leave the lot. The fine of EUR 200 targets vehicles without a label, mainly older or foreign-plated cars, not your rental.

Where to pick up in Playa d'en Bossa

You can collect in the resort itself or at the airport, which is about 3 kilometres away and reachable in a few minutes. The airport usually has the widest choice and the cheapest rates; a resort pickup saves you paying for a car on days you are not driving. Several suppliers run offices in the major resort centres including Playa d'en Bossa. One name with a presence on the island is Centauro. Either way, an no-deposit rate avoids a deposit hold.

Best time to rent in Playa d'en Bossa

May, June, September and early October are the easiest times to drive - warm, with the sea still good for swimming and the roads quieter than the peak. July and August are the busiest: rates climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and parking near the clubs is hard, so book several weeks ahead. Out of season the resort is much quieter and a car still makes sense for the inland and north-coast trips.

Playa d'en Bossa car hire FAQ

How far is Playa d'en Bossa from the airport?+

About 3 kilometres, a few minutes by road. You can pick up your hire car at the airport and be in the resort almost straight away, or collect in the resort itself.

Can my hire car drive into a low-emission zone on the island?+

Yes. Cars rented in Spain already carry the DGT environmental sticker that any low-emission zone requires, so a rental can enter with no extra paperwork. Check the windscreen sticker at pickup.

The EUR 200 fine only applies to older, non-compliant vehicles.

Do you need a credit card to hire a car in Playa d'en Bossa?+

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.

Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.

What is the deposit when you hire a car?+

The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.

If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.

How large is the deposit at pickup?+

It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.

You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.

Can you hire a car with no deposit?+

Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.

Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?+

The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.

The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.

In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.

What does the insurance cover?+

Cover comes in levels:

  • TPL (third-party liability) - compulsory and always included; covers damage you cause to others.
  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) - covers damage to the hire car itself, except glass and tyres.
  • Super CDW - reduces or removes the excess and covers what CDW does not, including glass and wheels; with it the car is usually given with no deposit.

You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.

What is the difference between minimum, basic and full cover?+
  • Minimum cover - only damage to other cars; you pay for your own car's bodywork, glass and wheels.
  • Basic (CDW) - adds partial cover for your car in an accident, but not glass or tyres.
  • Full cover (Super CDW) - covers all damage, including glass and wheels, and nothing is taken from the deposit.

If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.

Can you pay for the rental in cash?+

Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.

You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.

Can you pay with cryptocurrency?+

Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.

Can I take the hire car to another island?+

Taking the car by ferry to Formentera, Mallorca or the mainland must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.

It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.

Can you return the car somewhere else?+

Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Playa d'en Bossa and return in Ibiza Town or at the airport.

By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.

Are hire cars in Playa d'en Bossa automatic or manual?+

Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in July and August, so book one early if you need it - it makes the narrow inland lanes easier.

What documents do you need to hire a car?+

You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.

It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.

What is the minimum driving experience?+

To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
