No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving here is the GC-1 motorway along the coast plus the climb inland. Pick by group size and how far you plan to go, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy to park around San Fernando. Fine for two people staying near the dunes.
Automatic
Easier on the hairpins up to Roque Nublo. Automatics are limited on the island, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with boot room for the beach gear.
Luxury
A comfortable pick for the long coast and mountain days. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Playa del Ingles sits on the south coast of Gran Canaria, a beach resort in Maspalomas, part of the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana. Inside the resort you can walk between the beach, the Yumbo Centre and San Fernando, and the bus network is good, so the real value of car rental in Playa del Ingles is leaving the strip - the southwest coast and the mountains open up the moment you have your own wheels.
The local bus network is good and reaches most of the island within a couple of hours, but the timetables are the catch. A car turns a half-day bus mission into an hour each way on your own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most trips run along the GC-1 motorway, which keeps the southwest coast close. The drive to Puerto de Mogan is about 17 miles and takes roughly 23 minutes, passing Puerto Rico on the way. By road the distance to Mogan is around 30 km, an easy run inland from the coast.
The other direction is up. The driving distance from Playa del Ingles to Roque Nublo is about 25 miles and takes roughly 54 minutes, on a mountain road of tight bends where an automatic earns its keep. Las Palmas, the island capital, is about 41 km north, and Maspalomas with its dunes and lighthouse is next door at around 1 km. Each of those places.
The point for Playa del Ingles is that one pickup reaches the harbours, the dunes and the peaks, and you can be back the same evening. That is why many visitors rent here even when they stay near the resort all week.
There is no low-emission zone in Playa del Ingles or anywhere on the south coast, so this rarely affects your driving. The only ZBE on the island is being set up in Las Palmas, in the Alcaravaneras district, and it is still in progress. It is expected to apply across 2026 and will target vehicles without a DGT environmental sticker, the most polluting cars predating the Euro standards.
For a hire car this is not a worry. Cars rented in Gran Canaria are modern and carry a DGT sticker (0, ECO, C or B), which is what any zone requires, so a rental can drive into Las Palmas without extra paperwork. Fines for breaching the rule are 200 euros, rising up to 30 percent for repeat offenders - and they target older, non-compliant cars, not yours.
Quick checks at pickup
You can collect in the resort itself, or at the airport on arrival. Gran Canaria Airport to Playa del Ingles is a driving distance of 33 km, about a 40-minute drive on the GC-1. If you want a car for the whole stay, the airport is usually the cheapest and simplest pickup. If you only need wheels for a few day trips, a resort pickup saves you paying for days the car sits parked. Either way, choose an no-deposit rate with full cover built in to avoid a deposit hold.
The south of Gran Canaria stays warm all year, so there is no off-season for driving. Temperatures rarely drop below 18C, though in summer they can climb well beyond 40C. Winter is the busy stretch with northern Europeans escaping the cold, so book a few weeks ahead and reserve an automatic or 7-seater early, as those sell out first. Spring and autumn are the easiest for the mountain roads - warm, quieter and cheaper. In high summer the coast road gets busier and prices climb, so book in good time.
Gran Canaria Airport is about 33 km from Playa del Ingles, roughly a 40-minute drive on the GC-1 motorway.
Many visitors collect their car at the airport on arrival, as it is usually the cheapest pickup.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Tenerife, Fuerteventura or other islands must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Playa del Ingles and return in Las Palmas or at the airport.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across the Canaries. Automatics cost more and sell out first, so book one early if you want it - it makes the mountain road up to Roque Nublo much easier on the tight bends.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
