Benidorm is built for walking and for the tram, so you do not need a car for the Levante and Poniente beaches or the old town. The value of car rental in Benidorm is the rest of the Costa Blanca - the coves north towards Calpe, the mountain villages inland, and the towns the tram does not reach quickly. One pickup turns a beach week into a touring week.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Most people fly into Alicante Airport (ALC) and drive up. It is about 58 kilometres direct from the airport to Benidorm, roughly 40 to 45 minutes by car. The usual route is the AP-7 motorway, the Autopista del Mediterraneo, which runs straight up the coast. In July and August the corridor gets busy, so a midday or weekend arrival can add time. The good drives here are short. Altea is about 7 miles north, roughly 14 minutes by car, with its white old town above the marina. Calpe and the Penon de Ifach rock are about 23 km, around 30 minutes up the coast. Inland, Guadalest is about 22 km and 27 minutes, the castle village in the Marina Baixa hills, often paired with the Algar waterfalls nearby. Alicante itself is under an hour south on the AP-7. The point for Benidorm is that you can do any of these as a morning out and be back on the beach by lunch. That is why many visitors rent here even when the hotel is their main base.
Quick day drives from Benidorm
This is the one local rule to get right, and it works differently from most Spanish cities. Benidorm's Low Emission Zone covers around 74 hectares split into three sub-zones - Centro, Levante and Paseo de Poniente - the busiest pedestrian areas, watched by number-plate cameras.
Benidorm asks you to register the plate, not just to have a clean sticker. If your vehicle does not have a DGT label you likely will not be able to drive within the zone, unless you have a hotel reservation or a temporary exemption. In practice, hotels inside the zone register your hire car's plate for you - several have an online form where you give the registration and they process the permit free of charge for your stay. Ask your accommodation to add the plate when you check in.
For most renters this is simple. Hire cars are modern and carry the DGT sticker the zone requires, so once your plate is registered you can drive in. The easiest plan is to park at the free areas on the edge of town and walk or take the tram into the centre, which avoids the question altogether.
You can collect at Alicante Airport and drive up, or pick up in Benidorm itself if you want the first few days car-free. Local names operating here include Goldcar and Centauro. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold, which matters if you are only carrying a debit card.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads and the AP-7 free-flowing. July and August are the peak: rates climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the coast road backs up, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and a car still earns its keep for the inland villages once the beach season is over.
