Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), known locally as Gando, is the busiest airport in the Canaries and the gateway to the whole island. It sits 19 kilometres south of Las Palmas and 25 kilometres from the popular resorts of Maspalomas.
LPA has one large passenger terminal, which keeps navigation simple - all formalities take place in a single building. The car hire companies are on the ground floor in the Arrivals area. Many of the desks sit in Zone A, the walkway connecting International and EU Arrivals.
On-site companies keep their cars in the P2 parking area, a 4 to 5 minute walk from the passenger area, so you can hit the road soon after signing. A handful of suppliers run a free shuttle instead. OK Mobility has an office 400 metres from the terminal and Record Go sits about 3 kilometres south, both with complimentary shuttles to their counters. Your voucher names the exact desk and pickup point - read it before you land.

Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport or ID card and a driving licence ready at the desk. When completing the paperwork you must present a Spanish or international driving licence, plus a passport or ID card. To rent you need to be at least 21, and anyone under 25 pays a daily surcharge. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off.
One Gran Canaria-specific point: the terminal is closed to the public from midnight to 4:00 a.m. Most desks run into the evening, but if your flight lands very late, check the closing time on your supplier before you book - a missed pickup is hard to recover. Some companies offer key-collection or after-hours arrangements, sometimes for a small fee, so ask when you book.
The GC-1 motorway runs right past the airport, so you are on it within minutes - about a 20 to 25 minute drive into Las Palmas. From the airport, central Las Palmas is north on the coast-hugging GC-1, exiting at junction 16. For the south, follow the signs for "GC-1 Sur" as you leave.
The southern resorts are a short, simple run. It is about 20 miles to Maspalomas, roughly a 23-minute drive. After about 30 km, take exit 46 signposted GC-500 San Fernando - Maspalomas, then follow the road to the Maspalomas roundabout. Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico sit further along the same coast, each within reach in under an hour. One tip from drivers who know the road: watch for the speed camera shortly after you join the motorway.
There is no urban low-emission zone to worry about on Gran Canaria - the ZBE rules that affect mainland cities like Madrid and Barcelona do not apply here, so your hire car can drive anywhere on the island without extra paperwork.
