No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving here is flat coast road plus the run to the airport. Pick by group size and distance, not by looks.
Economy
Cheapest to run and easy to slot into the marina car park. Fine for two people.
Automatic
Easier in summer traffic on the N-332. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
Room for a family and the cases on the airport run from Alicante or Murcia.
Luxury
For longer coast drives in comfort. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Torrevieja is a compact beach town - the centre, the marina and the main beaches are walkable, so you do not need a car to get to dinner or the sand. Where car rental in Torrevieja earns its keep is everything outside that walking circle: the salt lakes, the string of coves down to Punta Prima, and the airport run.
The town has no train station, and there's no direct bus connection between Torrevieja and Alicante Airport. A hire car removes that problem and gives you the rest of the coast as well.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The big local draw is on the edge of town. The salt lakes sit right on the edge of Torrevieja, less than 10 minutes' drive from the town centre. One lake is green, the other a distinct pink, and there is free parking available along several spots around the lakes. Swimming is banned and enforced, so go for the photos and the flamingos, not a dip.
From there the coast opens up. The transfer to Murcia airport is 61 km and takes approximately 51 minutes, and the city of Murcia itself is a similar run for the cathedral and its old centre - it has its own page. Alicante is about 45 minutes north up the coast, also covered on its own page. Guardamar de Segura is the nearest hop, just up the road, where the Guardamar sand dunes continue north of Torrevieja's La Mata beach.
The point for Torrevieja is that one pickup reaches all of these and you are back the same day. Use the N-332 dual carriageway, which runs from Cartagena through Torrevieja towards Valencia, for the scenic coast route, or the AP-7 toll motorway when you want speed.
This is the one local rule worth knowing, and the timing matters. The Low Emission Zone in Torrevieja's centre is being implemented through 2026, but the sanctioning system will not take effect until January 1st, 2027. The zone covers the central streets around Calle Orihuela, Ramon Gallud and the seafront promenades.
For a hire car this barely matters. Cars rented in Spain are modern and carry a DGT environmental sticker (0, ECO, C or B), which is exactly what the zone requires, so your rental can drive into the centre with no extra paperwork. The planned EUR 200 fine, with the moratorium running until 1 January 2027, targets older non-compliant cars, not yours. The new underground car park at the port is being built so that all cars are permitted to enter for parking at the Port area.
Quick checks at pickup
Most people collect at one of the two airports, where the desks and the cheapest rates are, then drive in. To collect in town instead, local names include Goldcar and Centauro, whose Torrevieja office sits on Avenida Delfina Viudes. In the centre itself, it is difficult to find a free street parking space in summer, so the best bet is the large underground car park at the marina. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover avoids a deposit hold.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, quieter roads, and the flamingos are on the salt lakes through the spring breeding months. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the narrow town roads get busy with tourist drivers and locals alike. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and with more than 320 days of sun a year here, a car still makes sense for the inland trips out of season.
Alicante Airport (ALC) is about 45 minutes north, and Murcia Airport (RMU) is roughly 50 to 60 minutes inland. Alicante has more flights; pick whichever your route suits.
You can collect a hire car at either and drive in. There is no direct bus from Torrevieja to Alicante Airport, so the car also covers the airport run.
Yes. The zone is being phased in through 2026, with fines only from January 2027, and cars rented in Spain carry the DGT sticker the zone requires, so a hire car can enter freely. The marina car park accepts all cars.
The fines target older non-compliant vehicles, not yours.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance. There may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Torrevieja and return in Alicante or Murcia.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in July and August, so book one early if you want easier driving in the summer town traffic.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
