Zaragoza sits halfway between Madrid and Barcelona on the AP-2 and AVE line, which makes it an easy place to start a drive rather than just pass through. The city itself - the Basilica del Pilar, the Aljaferia and the Roman remains - is walkable, so the value of car hire in Zaragoza is reaching the rest of Aragon: the Pyrenees to the north, the wine country and old towns to the south and west.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. Drives from Zaragoza
Two bigger names sit within reach as long drives rather than day trips. Madrid is roughly three hours southwest on the A-2; Barcelona is about 305 km and just under three hours east. Both have their own pages worth reading if you plan to drop the car there - a one-way drop is priced separately, so flag it when you book.
Zaragoza has rolled out a Low Emission Zone covering the Casco Historico and the central district, with camera enforcement.
The restrictions apply Monday to Friday, roughly 8:00 to 20:00. Outside those hours - nights, weekends and public holidays - any vehicle can drive in and park without a sticker or permit. The fines target older cars with no DGT environmental label.
For a hire car this rarely matters. Cars rented in Zaragoza are modern and carry a DGT sticker (0, ECO, C or B), which is what the zone requires, so a rental can drive into the centre with no extra paperwork. If you do enter the zone by mistake, the cameras allow ten minutes to leave without a penalty.
