Orihuela is a historic city in the Vega Baja del Segura region of southern Alicante province, known as the birthplace of the great Spanish lyric poet Miguel Hernández. The city has a striking palm-lined cathedral, a bishop's palace, and several baroque churches in a well-preserved historic centre along the Segura river. Orihuela also encompasses the Orihuela Costa — a 16-kilometre coastal strip of sandy beaches and resorts (including Campoamor, Dehesa de Campoamor, and La Zenia) that are among the least crowded on the southern Costa Blanca. Alicante Airport is 35 minutes north and Murcia is 25 minutes south.

The historic centre has paid blue-zone parking and underground car parks near the cathedral. The old town streets can be narrow; the ring road car parks are more practical. Orihuela Costa resorts have free and paid coastal parking depending on location.
The AP-7 motorway connects Orihuela to Alicante in 30 minutes north and Murcia in 20 minutes south. Torrevieja and its salt lakes are 15 minutes northeast. The coastal road through Orihuela Costa connects the various beach resorts. Petrol stations on the AP-7 and N-332.
