No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Almost everyone hires here to drive into the Costa del Sol, not for the Rock itself. Pick by group size and how far up the coast you are going.
Economy
Cheapest to run and easy on the A-7 coast road. Fine for two people on a coastal trip.
Automatic
Easier in stop-start coastal traffic. Automatics are limited across the area, so book early.
7-seater & van
Room for a family and luggage on the run up to Marbella or back to the airport.
Luxury
A common pick for the western Costa del Sol. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Gibraltar is small enough to walk, and the road system is a tangle of one-way streets with limited, paid parking. Inside the territory a car is more of a burden than a help. The real reason to arrange car rental in Gibraltar is the coast to the east - one pickup and you are out along the A-7 to Estepona, Marbella and the rest of the Costa del Sol on your own schedule.
One quirk shapes every booking here. Virtually all hire cars supplied for collection at Gibraltar are actually supplied for pickup just across the border in Spain, because the airport sits right next to the border and most people want the car for Spain. So your hire car is almost always a Spanish-registered car collected in La Linea, which sidesteps the border queue entirely.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
There are two setups, and they matter. Hire from Avis at Gibraltar Airport and you collect the car on the airport side; book with a Spanish provider and you cross the border on foot and walk to their office in a car park a short distance from the crossing. Most rental desks sit in a hub just across the border in La Linea, around a five-minute walk from the arrivals hall.
The walk-across option is the popular one because it dodges the driving queue. If you are using the car in Spain, a company on the Spanish side of the border in La Linea is worth choosing, as you pick up after walking across and avoid getting stuck in a border queue on the way out. The airport page covers the suppliers, the desks and the exact arrivals walk-through.
Quick checks at pickup
The coast runs east in an almost continuous strip, so the drives are short. Estepona is around 45 minutes to an hour by car, fastest on the AP-7 toll road or slower on the free coastal A-7. Marbella is about 79 km, roughly an hour's drive. From there the rest of the Costa del Sol opens up.
The point for Gibraltar is that a single pickup reaches all of them and you can be back the same day. That is why most people who fly into the territory rent a car rather than rely on the bus.
Because your car is hired in Spain, the cross-border restriction works in your favour. Most Spanish rentals are allowed across the Iberian Peninsula - mainland Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar - with restrictions usually only on taking the car to Africa. If you instead hire a Spanish car and want to drive it into the Rock, check first: some companies now charge a small daily fee to cover Gibraltar, so confirm it when you book.
Low-emission zones (ZBE) - good news for rentals
Several Costa del Sol towns now run low-emission zones with camera enforcement. A hire car picked up in Spain already carries the required DGT environmental sticker, so it can drive into those zones with no extra paperwork. Your provider makes sure the car has the correct environmental sticker for legal access. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not your rental.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive the coast - warm, quieter roads, and a sea still warm enough to swim in autumn. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the coast road gets busy, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch and still works well if your plan is the coastal towns rather than the beach. One local note: Gibraltar Airport takes scheduled flights from the UK and is fairly prone to flights being diverted to Malaga in mist, so leave a little slack on a tight return.
Usually just across the border in La Linea, a five-minute walk from arrivals, where most rental desks sit. Avis collects on the airport side instead.
Spanish-side pickup avoids the driving queue at the border. Your voucher states the exact spot.
Yes. Cars hired here are Spanish-registered and most contracts allow driving across mainland Spain and Portugal. Restrictions usually only apply to taking the car to Africa.
Check your contract before you travel.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Driving onto the territory of Gibraltar must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it. Most cars stay on the Spanish side, where they are registered.
Many people park in La Linea and walk across, since the border queue for cars can be long. If you want to take the car over, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in La Linea and return in Estepona, Marbella or at Malaga Airport.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
About 79 km, roughly an hour on the A-7 and AP-7. Estepona is closer, around 45 minutes to an hour.
Both run along the coast east of Gibraltar.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in summer, so book one early if you need it.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
