Driving here splits between the flat A-7 coast road and the steep climb up to Mijas Pueblo. Pick by group size and how much hill work you want to do.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy to park in La Cala. Fine for two people staying on the coast.
Automatic
Easier on the winding climb up to Mijas Pueblo. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with boot room for the airport run.
Luxury
A natural fit for the western Costa del Sol. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Mijas is really two places, and that decides whether you need a car. The white village of Mijas Pueblo sits at 430 metres above the Costa del Sol, while Mijas Costa is a 12 km coastal strip running from Calahonda in the west to Fuengirola in the east. Public transport links them only by changing buses through Fuengirola, so a hire car is what ties the two halves together and gets you to the coves and golf courses in between.
Inside Mijas Pueblo itself you do not need a car - you park once and walk. Mijas Pueblo is a compact and pedestrian-friendly village, making it easy to explore at your own pace. The value of car rental in Mijas is reaching the rest of the coast and the hill villages on your own schedule rather than waiting on a bus timetable.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The coast road keeps every neighbour close. Fuengirola is about 10 minutes east and Marbella about 20 minutes west. Malaga city is roughly 35 minutes eastbound on the A-7.
Inland trips are where a car earns its keep. Ronda, the city split in two by a gorge, is about a 90-minute drive, and Nerja with its caves is roughly an hour away. The point for Mijas is that one pickup reaches all of them and you can be back the same day.
If you are based on the coast and driving up to the village, the route is straightforward. Take the A-7 coastal motorway to the Fuengirola exit, then follow the MA-426 road up through the mountains - a scenic 8 km climb with coastal views. The road winds, so an automatic makes the drive less work, especially in summer traffic.
One thing to know about the A-7 itself: the slip roads on and off are very short, so cars join from almost a standstill and you need to stay alert. Take the left lane where you can to let traffic merge.
Parking in Mijas
Most visitors collect their car at Malaga Airport (AGP) and drive down, since Malaga Airport is about 35 km from La Cala de Mijas, under 30 minutes by car. Local suppliers you will see on the coast include Centauro and Goldcar. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold - and a no-deposit rate works on a debit card.
Spring and autumn are the easiest times to drive here. April to June brings 18 to 25 degrees and manageable crowds, and September to October stays warm and dry with fewer tourists than summer. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the village car park fills early. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and a car still makes sense for the inland trips once the beach season is over - though the village can be cold and windy at 430 metres.
No, the old part is closed to non-residents. Use the large public car park just below the centre at Avenida Virgen de la Peña and walk up.
It fills by mid-morning in July and August, so arrive early or take the bus from Fuengirola.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Gibraltar is about an hour and a half west and the Portuguese border around 3 hours along the coast. Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance - there may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Mijas and return in Fuengirola, Marbella or Malaga.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. An automatic makes the winding 8 km climb up to Mijas Pueblo easier, especially in summer. Automatics cost more and sell out first, so book one early if you want it.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
