One-way and cross-border car hire in Spain
You can hire a car in one Spanish city and drop it in another - a one-way rental - for a fee that depends on the distance between the two points. You can also drive a Spanish hire car into most neighbouring countries, with Portugal the most common, as long as you tell the company and pay any cross-border fee. The two things that catch people out are the size of a long one-way fee and the countries that are simply not allowed.
One-way rentals within Spain
Picking up in one place and dropping in another is normal across Spain, and for short hops within the same region the fee is often small or waived. The cost climbs with distance: Malaga to Barcelona will carry a real one-way charge, while Malaga airport to the city centre may cost nothing. It is always cheaper to book the one-way at the start than to change the drop-off later, and on the islands a one-way between two airports on the same island is usually cheap.
Driving a Spanish rental abroad
- Portugal - almost always allowed. Tell the company and pay the cross-border fee if there is one. No border checks.
- Andorra, France, Gibraltar - usually allowed with notice and sometimes a fee. Confirm before you book.
- Italy and further EU - often allowed on request, but check; some companies restrict longer trips.
- Morocco - almost never allowed. Companies prohibit taking a Spanish rental across, even via the ferry.
Taking a car from Spain to Portugal
Spain to Portugal is the most common cross-border trip and it is straightforward - there is no manned border, so the only requirements are the company's. Declare the trip when you book so the insurance is valid across the border and any fee is set, and ask for the cross-border documentation in case you are stopped. The one practical surprise is tolls: several Portuguese motorways are electronic-only, read by an overhead gantry with no booth to pay at. Ask the company whether the car has a toll transponder fitted, or you can register a card with the Portuguese electronic toll system - otherwise an unpaid gantry becomes a fine that reaches you later.
Do not assume - get it in writing
Crossing a border without telling the company can void the insurance, and a one-way drop-off in the wrong place can mean a large recovery charge. Both are avoidable: set the route and the drop-off at the time of booking, and keep the confirmation that the trip and the fee are agreed. Morocco is the firm no - do not plan a Spanish rental around the ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa.
