Popular car types for Ibiza

The island is about 40 km by 20 km, so most drives are short. Pick by group size and where you are staying, not by looks.

Car hire in Ibiza: is it worth it

Ibiza is small but spread out, and the bus network thins outside summer. A hire car is what lets you reach the quieter coves and the north of the island instead of staying tied to your resort. Ibiza is a small island, roughly 40 km by 20 km, so wherever you want to go, it doesn't take long.

If you are based in one resort and only want the beach and the bars, you may not need a car at all. The value of car rental in Ibiza is the day trips: a different beach each day, an early start to beat the car parks, and getting home without waiting on a summer-only bus.

Payment and deposit

When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Where you can drive from Ibiza

Everything is within half an hour or so of the centre. By road, it is 16.5 km from Ibiza Town to the second largest town, San Antonio, and 15 km to the third largest town, Santa Eulalia. Playa d'en Bossa sits just south of the centre near the airport, so it is the shortest hop of all.

San Antonio is the west-coast base for the sunset beaches; Santa Eulalia is the calmer family town on the east coast; Playa d'en Bossa is the long beach strip closest to town. Each has its own page below with the detail. From any of them you are within reach of the west-coast coves like Cala Bassa and Cala Comte, and the boat across to Formentera leaves from Ibiza Town port.

Summer vehicle access rule - handled by the rental company

For the 2025 season the maximum capacity allowed per day is 20,168 private vehicles, 16,000 rented cars and a fixed number of caravans and motorhomes, with the cap running from 1 June to 30 September. The good news for you: rental agencies must comply with the vehicle limit, and tourists hiring a car do not need to manage permits themselves. The permit is something private drivers bringing a car on the ferry have to arrange, not renters. Booking early in peak summer still helps, as fleet availability tightens under the cap.

Where to pick up in Ibiza

Most car hire in Ibiza starts at the airport, where the desks and the cheapest rates are. For terminal desks and the arrivals walk-through, see the Ibiza Airport car hire page. To collect in town instead, Centauro is one of the names operating on the island. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.

Quick checks at pickup

  • Confirm a rate with full cover if you want to avoid a deposit hold.
  • Photograph any existing scratches before you drive off.
  • Note the fuel policy - full-to-full is usually cheapest.

Best time to rent in Ibiza

May, June and September are the easiest months to drive - warm, with the coves still reachable but the roads and car parks far quieter than peak. July and August are the busiest: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, the summer access cap is in force, and parking near the popular beaches fills by mid-morning, so book several weeks ahead and start early. Winter is the cheapest stretch and quiet, though some beach-area car hire desks and bus lines run reduced hours.

Ibiza car hire FAQ

Do I need a permit to drive a hire car in Ibiza in summer?+

No. Ibiza caps vehicle numbers from 1 June to 30 September, but rental companies hold the access permits for their fleets.

As a renter you do not register anything yourself - the permit only applies to private drivers bringing a car over on the ferry. Booking early in peak summer still helps with availability.

Are there low-emission zone restrictions for hire cars in Ibiza?+

No. Ibiza has no city low-emission zone like the mainland, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island, including Ibiza Town and the resorts, with no extra paperwork.

Do you need a credit card to hire a car in Ibiza?+

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.

Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.

What is the deposit when you hire a car?+

The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.

If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.

How large is the deposit at pickup?+

It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.

You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.

Can you hire a car with no deposit?+

Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.

Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?+

The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.

The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.

In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.

What does the insurance cover?+

Cover comes in levels:

  • TPL (third-party liability) - compulsory and always included; covers damage you cause to others.
  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) - covers damage to the hire car itself, except glass and tyres.
  • Super CDW - reduces or removes the excess and covers what CDW does not, including glass and wheels; with it the car is usually given with no deposit.

You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.

What is the difference between minimum, basic and full cover?+
  • Minimum cover - only damage to other cars; you pay for your own car's bodywork, glass and wheels.
  • Basic (CDW) - adds partial cover for your car in an accident, but not glass or tyres.
  • Full cover (Super CDW) - covers all damage, including glass and wheels, and nothing is taken from the deposit.

If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.

Can you pay for the rental in cash?+

Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.

You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.

Can you pay with cryptocurrency?+

Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.

Can I take the hire car to another island?+

Taking the car by ferry to Formentera, Mallorca or other islands must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.

It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.

Can you return the car somewhere else?+

Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Ibiza Town and return in San Antonio or at the airport.

By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.

Are hire cars in Ibiza automatic or manual?+

Most are manual, as across the country. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in July and August, so book one well ahead if you need it - it makes the narrow lanes down to the coves easier.

What documents do you need to hire a car?+

You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.

It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.

What is the minimum driving experience?+

To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
