Calpe sits under the Peñon de Ifach, the 332-metre limestone rock that you cannot miss as you arrive. The town itself - the seafront, the old quarter and the two main beaches at La Fossa and Arenal-Bol - is walkable. The real value of car rental in Calpe is everything outside it: the string of coast towns to the north and south, and the mountain villages inland that the buses barely reach.
There is no airport at Calpe. Most people arrive having flown into Alicante (ALC) about an hour south, so a hire car also covers the transfer in and out without paying for a taxi twice.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Calpe is roughly in the middle of the northern Costa Blanca, so most drives are short. Altea, with its white old town above the marina, is about 20 minutes south on the N-332. Benidorm is around 25 to 30 minutes further on, for the beaches and the theme parks. Alicante and its castle are about an hour south on the AP-7. Each has its own page.
Inland is where the car earns its keep. Guadalest, the mountain village with the castle, is around 40 minutes west; the Jalon Valley, with its vineyards and the Saturday antiques market, is about half an hour; and Moraira and Javea, the quieter coast towns north of the rock, are 15 to 25 minutes up the coast. The buses to these inland spots are slow and infrequent, which is the case for a car.
Plan where you leave the car before you set off. In summer the streets nearest the beaches and the Peñon become ORA blue zones, where you pay at the meter. There are some larger car parks, but they fill early during the peak summer months, so arrive in the morning to be sure of a space.
For the rock itself, there is a free car park near the visitor centre at the base, though vehicle access can be closed on busy days, leaving roadside parking only. The Arenal-Bol beach car park on the far side of the bay is a reliable fallback, with a flat walk along the promenade to the rock.
Spain's 2022 law requires larger towns to set up low-emission zones (ZBE), and these are spreading along the coast. Non-compliant vehicles can be denied entry to certain central streets and public car parks.
For a hire car this rarely matters. Cars rented in Spain are modern and carry a DGT environmental sticker (0, ECO, C or B), which is what these zones require, so a rental can drive in with no extra paperwork. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not yours. Check the windscreen for the sticker at pickup and photograph it.
Quick checks at pickup
You can collect in Calpe itself or pick up at Alicante airport and drive up. Local names to compare include Goldcar and Centauro. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold and the upsell at the desk.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive here - warm, with quieter roads and parking you can actually find near the beaches. The climb up the Peñon limits visitor numbers in April, May, July and August, so book that slot ahead. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the blue-zone parking fills by mid-morning, so book the car several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and a car still makes sense for the inland villages once the beach season is over.
