Puerto Rico sits in a deep valley on the south-west coast, and the resort is built up the steep hillsides on either side of the bay. Most of the hotels are quite far from the centre of town and up some very steep hills. That layout is the main reason a car is useful here - a hire car turns those hill climbs and the beach run into a five-minute drive instead of a long walk or a taxi.
The other reason is the coast beyond the resort. Puerto Rico is one valley along a string of them, and the GC-1 motorway passes right by it, so the whole southern coast opens up from one pickup.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Everything is reached on the GC-1 or the older coastal GC-500, both joined to the resort by the Puerto Rico exit. Rough distances and times:
Day trips on the GC-1
Local trips are even shorter. Amadores beach is a few minutes by road, and Puerto Rico is very near to the popular Aqualand Maspalomas water park. The point for Puerto Rico is that one pickup covers both the resort hills and the day trips, and you are back the same afternoon.
Once off the motorway you cross down into the valley on the old road. Via motorway GC-1 take the Puerto Rico exit, then cross Puerto Rico until you reach the old road and look for the Puerto Base parking near the harbour. Resort parking is tight in high season, so aim for a smaller car if you can and avoid leaving anything on show. None of your belongings should be visible if you leave the car parked, so no one is tempted to take them while you are away.
The GC-1 itself is straightforward. Around the resorts driving is pretty easy, with far less traffic than in the UK; the motorway is the GC-1, which carries a decent volume near the airport but soon thins out as you head south. Note that earphones and Bluetooth headsets are not allowed while driving, and speaking on the phone is prohibited unless you have a proper hands-free kit.
Most visitors collect at the airport and drive down, since that is where the desks and the cheapest rates are. The driving distance between Puerto Rico and Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is about 29 miles, and it takes roughly 31 minutes to drive. The whole run is motorway, so it is an easy first drive. There are also small outlets within the resort if you would rather collect a car partway through your stay - there are many small outlets within Puerto Rico for car hire. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Gran Canaria has no low-emission zone affecting the south coast, so there is no city access rule to worry about in or around Puerto Rico. If you want the airport desks and arrivals detail, that belongs on the airport page rather than here.
The south-west coast is the driest, warmest corner of the island, so a car is useful year round. Puerto Rico attracts British tourists in summer and Scandinavians in winter, all drawn by the near-constant sunshine. Winter is the busiest stretch for this resort and the time automatics and 7-seaters sell out first, so book several weeks ahead. Spring and autumn are quieter on the roads and usually cheaper to rent. Whenever you come, reserving early is where the savings are, especially for an automatic.
About 47 km, or roughly half an hour, almost entirely on the GC-1 motorway. It is an easy first drive straight off the plane.
No. Low-emission zones apply in mainland Spanish cities, not here, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island. The resort climbs steep hillsides, so the cars on offer are well suited to the local roads.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
