Sample prices for a 7-day rental. Final price, deposit and terms are confirmed on Localrent.

Desks in the terminal

All the rental desks at Vigo Airport (VGO) sit in one arrivals hall, by the exits.

No-deposit options

About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.

Full insurance

Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.

Free cancellation

Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.

Car types at Vigo Airport

Most drives from VGO are short motorway runs on the AP-9 plus narrow roads through the Rias Baixas. Pick by group size, not by looks.

Car hire at Vigo Airport (VGO)

Vigo-Peinador (VGO) is a single-terminal airport, which keeps the pickup simple.

Where the desks are: one terminal, one arrivals hall

VGO is about 10 km from the centre of Vigo, in the municipalities of Redondela, Vigo and Mos. There is a single passenger terminal, so the rental desks sit together in the arrivals hall. The car rental desks can be found at the Arrivals Hall of the airport's terminal, just across from the baggage claim area and next to the exits.

Most suppliers hand the car over from the AENA car park right outside. A couple keep their cars off-site: one location is 700 metres from the terminal with a shuttle bus, picking customers up at the meeting point in the AENA car park on level -1. Your voucher names the exact desk and pickup point for your booking, so check it before you land.

Suppliers at VGO

  • Europcar - desk in the arrivals hall, one of the most established names at VGO.
  • Centauro - a lower-cost option; check your voucher in case pickup is via the shuttle.
  • OK Mobility - another value supplier worth comparing on the no-deposit rate.

The exact desk and pickup point for your booking is always confirmed on your rental voucher.

Payment and deposit

When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Picking up, documents and late arrivals

Have your voucher, passport or ID card, and a driving licence held for at least a year ready at the desk - it keeps the queue short. Desks usually operate between 07:00 and 23:00, but this varies by supplier. If your flight lands late, check your supplier's closing time before booking, as a missed pickup is hard to recover.

On returns out of hours, leave the keys in the drop box, but note the airport closing window: park in the rental car park, lock the vehicle and leave the keys in the drop box on the office door, and remember vehicles may not be returned between 01:00 and 05:00 as the terminal is closed. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off.

Driving out of VGO onto the main roads

The airport sits right by the AP-9 motorway. Vigo city centre is about 5 miles away, a 15-minute drive via the AP-9. For Sixt's directions as an example: on the AP-9 take exit 157 to Vigo Airport, turn right onto Avenida del Aeropuerto, and at the roundabout take the fourth exit, with the rent-a-car parking on your left.

The AP-9 is your spine for the region. The A-52 motorway links towards Madrid, while the AP-9 leads to Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna. Heading the other way, the AP-9 also runs to Pontevedra, Bayona and Portugal. Be aware that stretches of the AP-9 are tolled, so keep a card handy.

Rough drive times from VGO

  • Vigo - about 15 minutes on the AP-9; the city page has the parking detail.
  • Pontevedra - around 19 miles, roughly 23 minutes by car.
  • Santiago de Compostela - about 90 km, around 1.5 hours.
  • A Coruna - about 150 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

Low-emission zones and the hire car

Vigo does not run a city-wide low-emission zone on the scale of Madrid or Barcelona, so the drive in from VGO is straightforward. Where Galician cities do introduce restricted zones, the rule for renters is the same across Spain: a car hired here already carries the DGT environmental sticker, so it can enter without extra paperwork. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not your hire car.

When you return, fuel up before the airport, as on-site prices are higher, then follow the car-hire return signs to your supplier's parking. If you plan a one-way drop in another city, flag it when you book rather than at the desk.

Vigo Airport car hire FAQ

Where are the car hire desks at Vigo Airport?+

VGO has a single terminal, so the desks sit together in the arrivals hall, across from baggage claim and next to the exits. Most cars are in the AENA car park outside.

A couple of suppliers shuttle you to an off-site branch about 700 metres away. Your voucher states the exact location.

What are the opening hours for pickup at VGO?+

Most desks run roughly 07:00 to 23:00, though it varies by supplier. The terminal closes overnight, so cars cannot be returned between 01:00 and 05:00.

If you land late, check your supplier's closing time before booking.

How long does it take to drive from VGO into Vigo?+

About 15 minutes via the AP-9, leaving at exit 157. The same motorway runs north to Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruna, and south towards Portugal.

Note that parts of the AP-9 are tolled.

Do you need a credit card to hire a car at Vigo Airport?+

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.

To avoid a hold, choose a full cover or no-deposit rate - then a debit card is usually fine and there is no pressure to buy extra cover at the desk.

What is the deposit when you hire a car?+

The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.

If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.

How large is the deposit at pickup?+

It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.

You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.

Can you hire a car with no deposit?+

Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.

Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?+

The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.

The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.

In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.

What does the insurance cover?+

Cover comes in levels:

  • TPL (third-party liability) - compulsory and always included; covers damage you cause to others.
  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) - covers damage to the hire car itself, except glass and tyres.
  • Super CDW - reduces or removes the excess and covers what CDW does not, including glass and wheels; with it the car is usually given with no deposit.

You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.

What is the difference between minimum, basic and full cover?+
  • Minimum cover - only damage to other cars; you pay for your own car's bodywork, glass and wheels.
  • Basic (CDW) - adds partial cover for your car in an accident, but not glass or tyres.
  • Full cover (Super CDW) - covers all damage, including glass and wheels, and nothing is taken from the deposit.

If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.

Can you pay for the rental in cash?+

Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.

You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup in the terminal.

Can you pay with cryptocurrency?+

Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.

Can I return the car somewhere other than Vigo Airport?+

Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect at VGO and return in Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela or A Coruna.

By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.

Are hire cars at Vigo Airport automatic or manual?+

Most are manual, as across Galicia. Automatics are in shorter supply and cost more, so book one early if you need it rather than hoping for one at the desk. The same applies to 7-seaters in summer.

What documents do you need to hire a car?+

You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.

It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.

What is the minimum driving experience?+

To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
