San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a small town 50 kilometres northwest of Madrid in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, built up around the Royal Monastery of El Escorial — one of the great architectural achievements of the Renaissance in Spain. Built under Philip II between 1563 and 1584, this vast complex of palace, monastery, basilica, royal pantheon and library is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Spain's most visited cultural monuments. The town itself is pleasant, with a well-preserved historic centre, and the surrounding Sierra de Guadarrama national park offers excellent walking and cycling. Madrid is 50 minutes by road or under an hour by the Cercanías train.

There is a large free car park on the outskirts of the town near the monastery access road. Street parking in the town centre is limited and can be restricted near the monastery. The car park on Calle Floridablanca is the most convenient for visiting the monastery.
The A-6 motorway and M-505 connect San Lorenzo to Madrid in 50 minutes southeast. Segovia is 35 minutes north over the Puerto de Navacerrada mountain pass (spectacular but narrow in winter) or 50 minutes via the A-6 and AP-61. The Valle de Cuelgamuros is 10 minutes northwest. Petrol stations on the M-505 and A-6.
