No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving from Granada is motorway out to Cordoba or Malaga, plus the climb up to the Sierra Nevada. Pick by group size and where you are heading, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and the easiest thing to fit into a city car park. Fine for two people staying near the centre.
Automatic
Easier on the winding A-395 up to the ski resort. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for ski gear or suitcases on the longer runs.
Luxury
A comfortable pick for the longer drives across Andalusia. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Granada itself is walkable - the Alhambra, the Albaicin and the centre are all best seen on foot, and the tram and buses handle the rest. The real value of car hire in Granada is everything outside the city: the Sierra Nevada in one direction, Cordoba and Malaga in the other, and the Alpujarra villages in between.
If your whole trip is the city, you can skip the car and walk. If you want the mountains or a day across Andalusia, one pickup covers all of it.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The Sierra Nevada is the closest trip and the one most people rent for. Sierra Nevada sits about 31 km southeast of Granada, and with light traffic the drive takes around 40 minutes on the A-395. On winter weekends and bank holidays it takes longer, with jams common at the start and end of the day.
Further out, the driving distance from Granada to Cordoba is about 201 km, roughly two hours on the A-92 and A-45. Malaga is around 130 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes the same way.
The point for Granada is that one pickup reaches the snow and two cities in opposite directions, and you can be back the same evening.
Driving up to the Sierra Nevada
This is the one local rule to get right. From 1 October 2025 the Granada Zone 1 ZBE came into force with fines being issued. The zone covers about 23.55 square kilometres - practically the whole city centre - with fines that typically start around EUR 200. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with cameras at the access points.
For a hire car this rarely matters. Vehicles with a B, C, ECO or Zero environmental badge are authorised to drive in the ZBE without restrictions, and cars rented in Granada are modern and carry one of those DGT stickers. The cars caught out are older ones - petrol made before 2001 and diesel before 2006 - not yours.
The historic streets are a separate problem. Neighbourhoods such as the Albaicin, Sacromonte, Carrera del Darro and the Realejo have access controlled by cameras, so do not try to drive into them. Book a spot in an authorised car park instead - that authorisation lets you reach the car park, not drive freely through the restricted streets.
Quick checks at pickup
Most car hire in Granada starts at the airport, where the desks and the cheapest rates are. For terminals, supplier desks and the arrivals walk-through, see the Granada Airport car hire page. To collect in town instead, names you will find here include Goldcar, Centauro and Europcar. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold. Park outside the ZBE and walk in, or use an authorised central car park.
Granada is a two-season city for drivers. The ski season runs from late November to early May, with the most reliable snow from January to March - that is the busy stretch on the Sierra Nevada road, so book an automatic early. Spring and autumn are the easiest times for the city and the longer drives to Cordoba and Malaga, with warm days and quieter roads. Summer is hot in the city but the high mountains stay cool, which is why a car still earns its keep for trips up to the peaks.
Into the low-emission zone, yes - cars rented in Spain carry the DGT sticker the ZBE requires, so the fines do not apply to you.
But do not drive into the historic streets such as the Albaicin or Sacromonte, which have camera-controlled access. Book an authorised central car park, or park outside the zone and walk in.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance. There may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Granada and return in Malaga or Seville.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
A manual is cheaper and more widely available, but an automatic is easier on the winding climb up to the resort, about 40 minutes from the city.
Automatics sell out first in Spain, so book one early if you want it, and carry chains in winter.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
