Most driving from Ronda is mountain road - winding, with elevation. Pick by group size and how comfortable you are on hairpins, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and easiest to thread through narrow village streets. Fine for two people.
Automatic
Easier on the A-397 climb up from the coast. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage on a touring trip.
Luxury & SUV
A higher driving position suits the mountain roads. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Ronda itself is compact and walkable - the bullring, the Puente Nuevo, El Tajo gorge, the churches and the tapas bars are all within a 30-minute walk. So the value of car rental in Ronda is not the town centre. It is everything around it: the white villages, the coast, and the wine country, none of which run to a useful bus timetable.
Ronda sits about 50 km inland from the Costa del Sol at 750 metres altitude, split by the deep El Tajo gorge. One pickup lets you drop down to the sea in the morning and be back above the gorge by dinner.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Setenil de las Bodegas is the closest trip - about 19 km, roughly 30 minutes by road, with houses built under the rock overhangs above the river. It has its own page.
Marbella is the obvious coast run. The A-397 mountain road covers about 65 km in 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 minutes, scenic and winding with elevation gain - allow extra time if you stop at viewpoints. It is a good road but not suitable for overtaking, with continuous hairpin bends and poor visibility, so be patient if you are stuck behind something slow.
For Malaga, the inland route is the calmer choice. The coastal route via Marbella and San Pedro on the A-397 has the views but is winding and slow; from Malaga Airport the faster inland route via the A-357 and A-367 through Teba is the better choice. Reckon on around 100 km either way.
Each neighbour has its own page below - here they are just "within reach" markers, not the day out itself.
Rough drives from Ronda
This is the one local rule to get right. The historic centre has a restricted-access zone with camera enforcement. To avoid a fine, do not rely on GPS sending you through Calle Virgen de la Paz or across the Puente Nuevo unless your vehicle is registered in Ronda; use the ring road and park outside the historic centre, then walk in. An unauthorised entry can mean a EUR 70 fine, and some hire companies add a EUR 30 admin fee to process it.
The APK2 Plaza del Socorro car park sits right in the centre, has 24-hour video surveillance and opening, and is the easiest place to leave the car. There is also free street parking near the train station, about a 15-minute walk from the centre, though spaces fill up early. If you are staying inside the restricted zone, give your accommodation your number plate in advance so they can register it.
Local desks in town include Centauro and Goldcar. Many people instead collect a cheaper car at Malaga Airport and drive in - both work, and either way an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold. Photograph any existing scratches before you drive off, and check the windscreen for the DGT environmental sticker.
Spring and autumn are the easiest months to drive the mountain roads - warm, with quieter traffic and clear views over the gorge. Ronda sits on a plateau at around 600 to 750 metres, so the climate runs a little fresher than the Costa del Sol below; summers are dry and warm, winters mild with more rain. July and August bring the peak, when prices climb and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch and still works well for the white-village runs once the beach season is over.
The historic centre has a camera-enforced restricted zone, so do not follow GPS across the Puente Nuevo or down Calle Virgen de la Paz unless your car is registered locally.
Use the ring road and park outside the old town, then walk in - everything is within a 30-minute walk. An unauthorised entry can mean a EUR 70 fine.
The APK2 Plaza del Socorro car park is central, open 24 hours and a short walk from the bullring and the gorge. There is also free street parking near the train station, about 15 minutes' walk out, but it fills early in peak season.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance. There may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Ronda and return in Marbella, Malaga or Seville.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. An automatic makes the A-397 climb up from the coast easier, with its constant hairpins, but they are in shorter supply and cost more, so book one early if you want it.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
