No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Driving here mixes coast motorway with narrow, steep mountain roads. Pick by group size and how far inland you plan to go.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy on the tight streets of Oviedo and the coast towns. Fine for two.
Automatic
Easier on the climb up to the Covadonga lakes. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage and walking gear.
Luxury & SUV
A higher car suits the mountain passes. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Asturias is a region where a car earns its keep faster than almost anywhere in Spain. The coast and the cities have buses and a commuter train, but the beaches, the fishing villages and the Picos de Europa sit off those lines. Local guides are blunt about it - to hop between beaches, head into the mountains or reach the inland villages, you need your own car, because bus coverage out there is thin and sometimes just one service a day.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The two main cities sit close together. Oviedo and Gijon are about 30 km apart, roughly half an hour on the A-66 and A-8, so you can see both in a day. Aviles, with its Niemeyer arts centre, is a 20-minute hop from the airport on the N-632.
The drives most people rent for are the nature ones. The Picos de Europa National Park is just over 90 minutes from the airport via the N-634, with the road through Cangas de Onis up to the Covadonga lakes. That last stretch is narrow, steep and winding, so a higher or automatic car makes it less stressful - and note that in summer the road from Covadonga up to lakes Enol and Ercina closes to cars, with shuttle buses running instead.
Along the coast, Ribadesella is about 65 km east of Gijon, roughly 50 minutes on the A-8, with Cangas de Onis another 30 minutes south. To the east, Santander is reachable in under two hours along the same coastal motorway for a cross-region day.
Drives worth the pickup
Asturias has none of the strict central low-emission zones you find in Madrid or Barcelona, so driving into Oviedo and Gijon is straightforward for visitors. Even where access rules tighten in future, this rarely matters for a rental: cars hired in Spain are modern and carry a DGT environmental sticker, which is what any such zone requires. The fines target older, non-compliant private cars, not yours.
Most car hire in Asturias starts at the airport, where the desks and the cheapest rates are. Suppliers on site include Europcar, Sixt and Enterprise, with the desks in the arrivals area and the cars in the car park a short walk away. For terminals, supplier desks and the arrivals walk-through, see the Asturias Airport car hire page. You can also collect in Oviedo or Gijon if you are spending a few days in town first. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Asturias is green because it rains, so pack for showers in any season. Late spring (May, June) and early autumn (September) give the warmest, driest driving, with the coast around 22 to 23 degrees and the mountain roads clear. July and August are the peak - Oviedo and the whole region get busy then, parking is harder and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is cheapest and fine for the cities and coast, but snow sits in the mountains from October to May, so check conditions before heading up to the Picos.
Asturias Airport (OVD) sits near Aviles, about 47 km from Oviedo and 40 km from Gijon.
Both are around a 30 to 40 minute drive on the A-8 and A-66 motorways.
Yes, the park is about 90 minutes from the airport via the N-634 through Cangas de Onis.
Note that in summer the final road from Covadonga up to lakes Enol and Ercina closes to private cars, with shuttle buses running instead.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
The Portuguese border is roughly 3 hours west and the French border a long way east. Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance - there may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Oviedo and return in Gijon, Aviles or at the airport.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
It helps. The roads up to the Covadonga lakes and through the Picos de Europa are narrow, steep and winding, and an automatic is easier on those climbs.
Automatics are limited in Spain and sell out first, so reserve one early.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
