Getafe is a major city in the southern Madrid metropolitan area, one of the largest municipalities of the Community of Madrid. It is home to the European aeronautical and defence industry cluster — Airbus has a major assembly plant here — as well as the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. For visitors, Getafe is a practical base for exploring the capital: Madrid's city centre is 15–20 minutes north, Toledo is 45 minutes south, and the Pinto and Valdemoro commercial areas are on the doorstep. Barajas Airport is approximately 30 minutes by road.

The A-4 motorway (Madrid-Cádiz) runs through Getafe, connecting to Madrid's Puerta del Sol in 20 minutes and to Toledo in under 40 minutes. The M-50 ring road links Getafe to the A-5 (Portugal) and A-6 (La Coruña) without entering Madrid. Petrol stations on the A-4 and main town roads.
