Driving here mixes flat coast road with a steady climb up to Teide and a few narrow town streets. Pick by group size and how far inland you plan to go.
Economy
Cheapest to run and the easiest thing to park in the old town's narrow streets.
Automatic
Easier on the climb up to Teide. Automatics are limited on the island, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage on the airport run.
Luxury
For the coast road in something nicer. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Puerto de la Cruz sits in the Orotava Valley on the north coast, away from the big southern resorts. The town itself is walkable - the harbour, the Lago Martianez pools and Playa Jardin are all close together. The real reason to book car hire in Puerto de la Cruz is what sits just outside it: Teide National Park up the hill, the old towns along the north coast, and the island capital a short motorway run east.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The standout drive is Teide. The road climbs from the town to the summit area in about 45 minutes, and it is a wide two-lane road, not the white-knuckle hairpins people sometimes warn about - that is the Masca road on the far west side, which is a different trip.
Closer to home, La Orotava is roughly a 15-minute drive up the slope, with its 17th-century centre and carved wooden balconies. Along the north coast, Garachico and Icod de los Vinos - home to the old dragon tree - sit within about 40 km, an hour or so by the motorway. Santa Cruz, the capital, is about 36 km east on the TF-5, around 25 to 30 minutes outside rush hour.
The wider point for Puerto de la Cruz is that one pickup covers the whole north and the centre of the island, and you can be back the same evening. Most other corners of Tenerife are within a two-hour drive.
Quick checks at pickup
The older streets near the harbour are narrow and can be congested, with rush hour roughly 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning and 5:00 to 7:00 in the evening. Most visitors leave the car in a car park and walk the centre. There is no low-emission zone to worry about here - that rule applies in mainland cities, not Puerto de la Cruz - so a hire car can drive anywhere in town.
One local quirk: fog can settle over the valley on winter mornings and evenings, cutting visibility on the higher roads. Slow down and use the car's fog lights if you hit it on the climb.
You can collect in town - several suppliers run desks along the main avenues and from hotels such as the Alua on Calle Antonio Ruiz Alvarez and an office on Avenida Familia Bethencourt. Many visitors instead pick up at the airport on arrival: Tenerife North (TFN) is about 30 minutes away, and Tenerife South (TFS) about an hour by the TF-5 and TF-1. Either way, an no-deposit rate avoids a deposit hold.
The north stays mild year-round, which is why the area markets itself as the island of eternal spring. Spring and autumn are the easiest stretches to drive, with quieter roads and warm but not fierce weather on the climb to Teide. July and August are the peak: rates climb and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. Winter is the cheapest stretch, and a car still earns its keep for the inland trips even when the sea is cooler - just watch for morning fog.
About 45 minutes up the hill on a wide two-lane road. It is a steady climb rather than the narrow hairpins some people warn about - those are on the Masca road on the far west of the island, which is a separate trip.
No. Low-emission zones apply in mainland Spanish cities, not here, so a hire car can drive anywhere in town. The main local points are narrow old-town streets and occasional winter morning fog on the higher roads.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Gran Canaria, La Gomera or other islands must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Puerto de la Cruz and return at TFN or TFS.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across the island. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in summer, so book one early if you need it - it makes the climb to Teide easier.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
