Murcia (Corvera) International Airport (RMU) opened in January 2019 to replace San Javier, and it was built as a single linear terminal, so the walk from baggage belt to the rental desks is short. With just one terminal, the layout is compact - baggage, desks and car park are all on the same level while still providing essential services.
RMU has one terminal, with arrivals and departures both on Level 0. Car hire is available just a few steps from the terminal, and the main suppliers occupy offices in front of the building. After baggage claim you follow the "Car Rental" signs out of the arrivals hall and cross the road to the office area opposite. The desk and the cars sit together in the open-air car park, so you drive straight off.
Not every supplier is right at the terminal. Some off-site operators run a shuttle - Centauro and Drivalia sit at the exit of the RM-17 a few kilometres away, with the Avis-Budget office further out. Your voucher tells you whether to walk across the road or wait for a branded bus.

Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport, driving licence and the booking card ready at the desk - it keeps the queue short after a flight. Most major providers require the main driver to be at least 21, and drivers aged 21 to 24 usually pay a young-driver surcharge of roughly EUR 10 to 25 a day.
Hours vary by supplier, so check yours before you book. Goldcar runs to about 22:00 on most days, while OK Mobility's desk closes earlier in the evening. If your flight lands late, confirm the closing time first - a missed pickup at a smaller airport is hard to recover. With an off-site supplier such as Centauro, contact them if your flight arrives near closing so they can wait for the shuttle.
Quick checks at pickup
Leaving the airport is well signposted. The exit is easy to follow, and the A-30 main road is around 4km from the airport. From there the A-30 and RM-19 put you on the coast quickly: Murcia city is about 25 minutes for the cathedral and old centre, and Cartagena is roughly 30 minutes away. The La Manga strip on the Mar Menor is about a 40-minute drive, and Torrevieja up the coast is within reach for a day. Each has its own page below.
There is no low-emission zone to worry about on the drive from RMU - Murcia has not enforced a city ZBE in the way Madrid or central Barcelona have. If that changes, the rule is the same everywhere in Spain: a car hired here already carries the DGT environmental sticker that any zone requires, so a rental can drive in without extra paperwork. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not your hire car.
Fuel up before you reach the airport, as the on-site area is limited. There is a Cepsa petrol station at junction 161 on the A-30, about 5 km from the airport, where you can refill before returning. For terminal suppliers, cars from Europcar, Firefly, Goldcar-InterRent and OK Mobility are returned to the general car park in front of the terminal. If you booked an off-site supplier, return to their drop-off and take the shuttle back to departures. If you plan a one-way drop in Alicante, Almeria or Valencia, flag it when you book rather than at the desk, as it is priced separately.
