Can Picafort sits in the centre of the Bay of Alcudia on the north coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Santa Margalida. The resort is compact and walkable, with shops and restaurants lined along Paseo Colon down to the harbour, so you do not need a car for the beach itself.
Where car rental in Can Picafort earns its keep is the moment you want to leave the resort. The number 2 bus runs along the coast to Alcudia and Port de Pollenca, but it works to a timetable. A hire car lets you reach the inland villages, the Tramuntana mountains and the quieter coves on your own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The town is a practical base because the north of the island fans out from it. Mallorca repays a car here more than most places, because so much of the north is awkward to reach by bus.
One pickup reaches all of these and you can be back the same evening. That is why many visitors rent here even when they stay near the beach for most of the week.
The roads in the north are easy - flat along the bay, with no winding passes until you head into the Tramuntana. The seafront promenade is closed to cars, so you park in the streets behind the beach, and spaces fill early on summer mornings. Set off early if you want a spot near the sand.
The Ma-13 motorway towards Palma is the main fast road, and there are speed cameras across the island, so watch the limits. Mallorca has no city-centre low-emission zone affecting a resort like Can Picafort, so there is no access restriction to worry about here.
Quick checks at pickup
Most visitors fly into Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) and collect there, which is where the desks and the cheapest rates are. The drive to Can Picafort is about an hour on the Ma-13, with no mountain roads in the way. There are also local rental offices in the resort itself, near the promenade, if you prefer to spend the first days on the beach before picking up a car. Either way, choose an no-deposit rate with full cover built in to avoid a deposit hold.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads and a sea still warm enough to swim in autumn. July and August are the peak: prices climb, automatics and 7-seaters go first, and the beach car parks fill by mid-morning, so book several weeks ahead. Rental costs bottom out in winter, with February the cheapest stretch, and a car still makes sense for the inland trips once the beach season is over.
