Cordoba's old town around the Mezquita and the Jewish Quarter is small and best walked, and the AVE high-speed trains link it to Seville, Granada and Malaga in roughly an hour each. So you do not need a car to see Cordoba itself.

Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Cordoba sits in the middle of Andalucia, so the three big cities are all day-trip range. Seville is the closest at about 45 minutes to an hour northwest on the A-4 motorway. Malaga and the coast are roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours south on the A-45. Granada and the Alhambra are about 2 hours southeast.
The trips with no train are where the car earns its keep. Medina Azahara, the ruined Moorish palace-city, is about 20 minutes west of Cordoba. The Subbetica hill villages, the olive towns and the white villages around Ronda all sit one to two hours out and run on their own schedule rather than a timetable.
This is the one local rule to get right. Cordoba has had an active low-emission zone since February 2023, with camera enforcement covering the historic centre. The phased restrictions tighten on the most polluting older cars first, with B-sticker and C-sticker vehicles affected in later years.
For a hire car this rarely matters. Cars rented in Cordoba are modern and carry a DGT environmental sticker (0, ECO, C or B), which is what the zone requires, so a rental can drive in with no extra paperwork. The fines, which start around EUR 200, target older or foreign-plated private cars - not yours.
Quick checks at pickup
Most car hire in Cordoba starts at or near the railway station, which sits just north of the old town and keeps you out of the narrow centre. Local names include Goldcar, Centauro and Europcar. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold, and a no-deposit option works with a debit card.
Spring (April and May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads. Cordoba summers are extreme, regularly over 40C in July and August, so if you come then plan the longer drives for early morning and keep the air conditioning on. Winter is the cheapest stretch and perfectly fine for the inland trips, though it can be rainy. Book two to three weeks ahead for the best price, and earlier still if you need an automatic or a 7-seater.
Central Cordoba has had a low-emission zone since February 2023, but cars rented in Spain carry the DGT sticker the zone requires, so a hire car can enter.
The old town streets are narrow, so a car park near the railway station is the easier choice. The fines only apply to older, non-compliant vehicles.
