About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.

Full insurance

Car types at Girona-Costa Brava Airport

Most people here drive straight to a Costa Brava resort or down the AP-7. Pick by group size and how far you are going, then compare in one search.

Car hire at Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO)

Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) sits 12.5 km southwest of Girona, next to the village of Vilobi d'Onyar, and it is the main arrival point for the Costa Brava resorts. The whole operation runs from one small terminal, so collecting a car here is quick once you know where the desks are.

Where the desks are: the single terminal

The airport operates one passenger terminal that handles all flights, so you will not have to search for the right building. Most provider desks are in the arrivals hall on the ground floor, and after the paperwork your car is usually waiting in the on-site car park a short walk from the terminal exit. That car park sits about 10 metres from the terminal and has 3,600 spaces. Follow the "Car Hire" or "Rent a Car" signs as you leave baggage reclaim.

Suppliers at GRO

  • Goldcar - one of the budget names at the airport, desk in the arrivals hall.
  • Centauro - competitive no-deposit rates, usually collected from the on-site car park.
  • Drivalia - present at GRO for pickup off the plane.

A few suppliers run a short courtesy shuttle to a nearby branch rather than handing you the car in the terminal car park. The meeting point for your booking is written on the rental voucher - check it before you land.

Payment and deposit

When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Picking up and late arrivals

Have your voucher, passport, a driving licence held for at least a year, and the booking card ready at the desk. The minimum age is generally 21, and drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge.

The airport itself is open around the clock, but desk hours vary by supplier - some keep full hours, others close earlier. As a guide, one major name lists hours of 08:30 until 11:45 PM daily. If your flight lands late, check your supplier's closing time before booking, as a missed pickup is hard to recover. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off.

Driving out of GRO and onto the main roads

The airport is well connected to the road network: the AP-7 motorway, part of the European route E-15, links it directly with Barcelona to the south and the French border to the north. From the airport roundabouts you join the N-156 and C-25, then the AP-7.

The resort runs are short. The driving distance to Lloret de Mar is about 18 miles and takes roughly 24 minutes. Tossa de Mar is a little further along the same coast, about 40 minutes east. By car you can reach Barcelona in around 1 hour and 15 minutes down the AP-7 if you are using GRO as a budget gateway to the city.

Crossing into France and low-emission zones

GRO is about a 40-minute drive from the French border, so a day across the line is realistic. A cross-border trip into France is allowed by most suppliers but must be declared when you book or at the desk - do not cross undeclared. If you plan to drive into Girona or Barcelona, cars hired in Spain already carry the required DGT environmental sticker, so a rental can enter any low-emission zone with no extra paperwork. The fines target older or foreign-plated private cars, not your hire car.

Two practical notes. The AP-7 has tolls on some stretches, so keep a card or cash handy at the booths. When you return, fuel up before the airport, as on-site prices are higher, then follow the "Rent a Car" signs on the approach to the airport - the return parking is near the terminal building.

Girona airport car hire FAQ

Where are the car hire desks at Girona-Costa Brava Airport?+

In the arrivals hall on the ground floor of the single terminal. Follow the "Rent a Car" signs out of baggage reclaim.

Most cars wait in the on-site car park a short walk away, while a few suppliers shuttle you to a nearby branch. Your voucher states the exact meeting point.

Can I pick up a hire car late at night at GRO?+

The airport is open 24 hours, but desk hours vary by supplier and some close before midnight. If you land late, check your chosen company's closing time before booking so your pickup is not missed.

How far is Lloret de Mar from GRO by car?+

About 30 km, roughly a 25-minute drive south. Tossa de Mar is a little further along the same coast, about 40 minutes.

Barcelona is around 1 hour 15 minutes down the AP-7.

Do you need a credit card to hire a car at Girona Airport?+

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.

To avoid a hold, choose a full cover or no-deposit rate - then a debit card is usually fine and there is no pressure to buy extra cover at the desk.

What is the deposit when you hire a car?+

The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.

If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.

How large is the deposit at pickup?+

It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.

You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.

Can you hire a car with no deposit?+

Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.

Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?+

The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.

The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.

In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.

What does the insurance cover?+

Cover comes in levels:

  • TPL (third-party liability) - compulsory and always included; covers damage you cause to others.
  • CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) - covers damage to the hire car itself, except glass and tyres.
  • Super CDW - reduces or removes the excess and covers what CDW does not, including glass and wheels; with it the car is usually given with no deposit.

You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.

What is the difference between minimum, basic and full cover?+
  • Minimum cover - only damage to other cars; you pay for your own car's bodywork, glass and wheels.
  • Basic (CDW) - adds partial cover for your car in an accident, but not glass or tyres.
  • Full cover (Super CDW) - covers all damage, including glass and wheels, and nothing is taken from the deposit.

If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.

Can you pay for the rental in cash?+

Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.

You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup in the terminal.

Can you pay with cryptocurrency?+

Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.

Can I drive my GRO hire car into France?+

The French border is about a 40-minute drive north on the AP-7. Most suppliers allow it, but you must declare the cross-border trip when booking or at the desk.

There may be a small fee and an insurance note. Do not cross undeclared.

Can I return the car somewhere other than Girona Airport?+

Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect at GRO and return in Lloret de Mar, Figueres or Barcelona.

By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.

Are hire cars at Girona Airport automatic or manual?+

Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics are in shorter supply and cost more, so book one well ahead if you need it. The same applies to 7-seaters in summer.

What documents do you need to hire a car?+

You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.

It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.

What is the minimum driving experience?+

To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
