Costa Calma is a quiet resort on the Jandia peninsula in southern Fuerteventura, built around one long sandy beach with hotels, restaurants and a promenade. You can walk to the town beach, but the better stretches and most of the island sit some way off, and the local bus runs only a handful of times a day. That is where a hire car earns its place: car rental in Costa Calma turns a beach-and-hotel week into a chance to reach the rest of the south on your own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The wild beaches are the nearest reward. Sotavento and its famous lagoon are about 10 minutes south, and Esmeralda is around 5 minutes the other way, both reached on short paved roads. The Risco del Paso end of Sotavento is where the René Egli windsurf school and the kitesurf championships set up each July and August.
Further out, Morro Jable and the south coast are roughly 30 km down the FV-2, about half an hour. Oasis Park at La Lajita, with camels and animal shows, is a short drive north and works well for families. The longest run worth doing is the rough track over to Cofete on the Atlantic side of the Jandia peninsula - check your hire terms first, as most insurance does not cover unpaved tracks.
One pickup in Costa Calma reaches all of these and gets you back the same day, which is why many visitors rent here even when they stay close to the hotel most of the week.
Driving notes for Costa Calma
Unlike Malaga or Barcelona, Costa Calma and the Fuerteventura roads have no low-emission zone (ZBE) to worry about. You can drive your hire car anywhere on the paved network without extra stickers or registration. Cars rented on the island are modern and already carry the DGT environmental sticker should you ever need it elsewhere.
Most visitors collect at Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) on arrival and drive the 65 km south on the FV-2, around 55 minutes. Local desks also operate in the resort itself, including offices around the Bahia Calma shopping centre, so an in-town pickup is possible if you arrive by transfer and want the car later in your stay. Either way, choose an no-deposit rate with full cover built in to avoid a deposit hold.
Fuerteventura is mild all year, so there is no bad time to drive here. January to March suits windsurfers and kitesurfers, when you can move between Costa Calma and the northern spots in a morning. July and August are the peak: prices climb and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. The hottest months run July to October, around 24C, and rain is rare whenever you come.
