Car rental at Asturias Airport (OVD) - desks in the arrivals hall. Compare deals for the Picos de Europa, the Cantabrian coast and Oviedo city.
Desks in one terminal
OVD has a single terminal, so every car hire desk is a few steps from the baggage belts.
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Asturias means coast roads and climbs inland, so pick by group size and how far you are driving. Compare the groups below before you book OVD car hire.
Small & budget
Cheapest off the plane and easy on the N-632 lanes near the airport.
Automatic
Easier on the climbs towards the Picos. Automatics are limited here, so book before you fly.
7-seater & van
Room for the family and the luggage on the run into Gijon or Oviedo.
Luxury & SUV
An SUV suits the back roads inland. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Asturias Airport (OVD) sits at Santiago del Monte in Castrillon, the only airport with scheduled flights in the region. In 2024, the airport handled 1,993,256 passengers and managed 15,465 operations. It is compact, with one terminal, so collecting a car here is quick.
There is one terminal, and you arrive on the ground floor. Ground floor (Planta 0) is the arrival zone where all passengers arrive, with baggage claim belts, car rental counters, customs control and the exit to the public area. All the car hire desks are located on the ground floor in the luggage-claim area, alongside the tourist office. Departures and check-in are one level up.
Some suppliers run their cars from the airport car park just in front of the terminal, while others use an office a short walk away. Your voucher tells you exactly where to go for the company you booked.

The exact desk and pickup point for your booking is always confirmed on your rental voucher - check it before you land.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
Have your voucher, passport, driving licence held for at least a year, and the booking card ready at the desk. The minimum age to rent a car in Spain is generally 21 years old, and drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge - at one supplier here that runs to a daily surcharge of 23.00 EUR for renters between 21 and 24 years of age. Check the closing time on your supplier if your flight lands late, as OVD is a smaller airport and desk hours are shorter than at the big hubs. Inspect the car for existing scratches and photograph them before you drive off.
For a late return, several suppliers run a key box. A 24/7 return service is available - if you are returning the car at night or outside office hours, leave it in the rental office car park and place the keys in the designated box. Confirm the exact drop-off bay on your voucher, since some offices are next to the terminal rather than inside it.
OVD is well placed for the whole region. The airport may be reached by both the A-8 motorway and the N-632 national road. The A-8 runs along the coast and the A-66 heads south inland, so you are on a main road within a couple of minutes of the car park.
Where the main roads take you
When you return, fuel up before you reach the airport, as nearby pump prices are higher, then follow the car hire return signs to your supplier's bays in the car park. There is no low-emission zone to worry about at OVD or on the drive into Gijon and Oviedo - a hire car picked up in Spain carries the DGT environmental sticker anyway, so any future restriction would not affect you. If you plan a one-way drop in another city, flag it when you book rather than at the desk.

Some suppliers keep their cars in the airport car park or at a nearby office - your voucher states the exact location.
Yes with most suppliers. Several run a key box - if you return at night or outside office hours, leave the car in the rental office car park and drop the keys in the designated box.
Confirm the exact bay on your voucher before you travel.
Gijon is about 40 km and roughly 30 to 35 minutes on the A-8. Oviedo is about 47 km, around 35 minutes via the A-8 and A-66.
Aviles is the nearest city at about 15 km, under 20 minutes.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
To avoid a hold, choose a full cover or no-deposit rate - then a debit card is usually fine and there is no pressure to buy extra cover at the desk.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup in the terminal.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect at OVD and return in Gijon, Oviedo or Aviles.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics are available but in shorter supply and cost more, so book one well ahead if you need it.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
