Costa Teguise is a compact, level resort you can walk end to end, so you do not need a car to reach the beach or the shops. The value of car rental in Costa Teguise is its position: it sits on the east coast within easy reach of the north of Lanzarote, so one pickup turns a beach week into an island tour.
If your plan is a week by the pool with two or three days of sightseeing, hiring for those days only is often cheaper than a full week. Over a dozen car rental firms cluster along the main hotel strips, and there is no need to hire from the airport for a full week if you only plan two or three days of sightseeing.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Day drives from Costa Teguise
You can drive from north to south in around 45 minutes, so nowhere on Lanzarote is far. Arrecife, the capital, is only a few kilometres south if you want shops and the castles.
Most roads are wide and in good condition, and visibility is generally very good. There are no toll roads in Lanzarote. Costa Teguise has no low-emission zone, so any hire car can drive in and around the resort freely - the access restrictions you read about for Spanish cities do not apply here.
Two local points trip people up. Any child under 12 or under 1 metre 35 cm must sit in the back, or you risk a EUR 200 fine. And if you get caught driving in flip-flops you can be fined EUR 200. The alcohol limit is 0.05 per cent, lower than the UK - a very small glass of wine or low-alcohol beer.
Larger resorts like Costa Teguise have many car parks as well as areas offering free parking. Use a marked car park where you can, and avoid white, yellow or blue lined bays unless you are sure of the rules.
Quick checks at pickup
Most Costa Teguise car hire locations are near Playa de las Cucharas, one of the resort's most popular beaches. Collecting in the resort the morning after you arrive avoids driving an unfamiliar car straight off a flight, and means you only pay for the days you actually need. Costa Teguise is the most exposed of the island's main resorts. It is the least sheltered and most northerly, so in winter it can be cooler, cloudier and windier here than in resorts to the south. Those factors fade from around March onwards. Spring and autumn give warm, settled days and quieter roads. July and August are the peak: prices rise and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead. Island prices run higher than mainland Spain because everything is imported, which makes booking early worth more here than elsewhere.
Most pickup points sit near Playa de las Cucharas, a few minutes from the main hotels. Collecting in the resort lets you skip the airport queue and only pay for the days you drive.
