Paying for car hire in Spain by card
On a standard rate, Spanish rental companies want a credit card in the main driver's name and block a deposit on it - often a few hundred to over a thousand euros - which they release after you return the car. Debit cards are usually refused on these rates. The way around both the credit-card rule and the deposit is a no-deposit rate with full insurance included: nothing is held on your card, and a debit card is accepted.
| Standard rate | No-deposit rate | |
|---|---|---|
| Card needed | Credit card, driver's name | Debit or credit card accepted |
| Deposit held | Yes - hundreds to 1,000+ euros | None |
| Insurance | Basic, with an excess to pay | Full cover included |
| Day rate | Lower | A little higher |
| Best for | A credit card holder happy with a hold | Debit card, or anyone avoiding the deposit |
How the deposit works
A deposit is not a payment - it is a hold. The company freezes an amount on your credit card for the duration of the rental as security against damage, fuel or fines, then releases it when the car comes back in order. The size depends on the car: small for an economy hatchback, large for a van or a premium model. The catch is that a hold ties up part of your credit limit for the whole trip, and debit cards are usually not accepted for it because the money would leave your account rather than just be reserved.
No credit card? Book a no-deposit rate
If you do not have a credit card, or simply do not want a hold on it, choose a rate that includes full insurance with no deposit. The price is a little higher per day, but nothing is blocked, small damage is already covered, and a debit card is accepted. It is the simplest answer to renting in Spain without a credit card.
Card rules to know
- Name must match - the card has to be in the main driver's name, not a partner's.
- Physical card - bring the card itself; phone wallets are often not accepted for the deposit.
- No prepaid or virtual cards - these are refused for deposits even when a normal debit card would do.
- Enough headroom - the hold needs to fit within your available credit limit.
