Formentera is the smallest and most southerly of the Balearic Islands, accessible only by ferry from Ibiza in around 35 minutes. The island is celebrated for some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean — Ses Illetes, Es Pujols, and the turquoise shallows of the Ses Salines natural park — with water clarity that rivals the Caribbean. While many visitors explore by bicycle or scooter, a rental car makes it easy to reach the island's quieter spots and transport luggage. Cars are picked up at the ferry port of La Savina on arrival.

Parking near the most popular beaches is very limited in July and August; national park zones restrict vehicle access at Ses Salines. Free parking is available in the main town of Sant Francesc and the surrounding residential streets.
The main road FM-1 crosses the island from La Savina to Cap de Barbaria in about 15 minutes. Roads are quiet but congested near the busiest beaches in peak summer. No petrol stations at the beaches — fill up at La Savina or Sant Francesc before touring.
