Car rental in Mojacar for the Cabo de Gata natural park (40 min), the mini-Hollywood film sets at Tabernas desert and the inland Sierra Alhamilla.
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
Most driving here is the A-7 motorway plus the climb up to Mojacar Pueblo. Pick by group size and the steep village streets, not by looks.
Economy
Cheap to run and easy to park near Mojacar Playa. Fine for two people staying on the beach.
Automatic
Easier on the narrow climb into the old village. Automatics are limited in Spain, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with room for luggage on the airport run.
Luxury
A step up for the coast road. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Mojacar is split into two parts: the pueblo, perched high on the Sierra de Cabrera foothills, is a striking cluster of white houses, with the beach resort below. A hire car ties the two together and saves you waiting on the local bus between the village and the 17 km of beach.
The bigger reason to rent here is that Mojacar sits well off the main airport. Public transport is slow - you take a bus from Almeria Airport into Almeria city, then a bus to Vera, then another to Mojacar, which takes at least three hours. Car hire in Mojacar replaces that with a single drive on your own schedule.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The nearest airport is Almeria (LEI). It is about 90 km southeast of Mojacar, roughly a 50-minute drive, and it is one motorway the whole way - the A-7 - with no toll roads and no busy roundabouts. If you collect at the airport, you are on the beach in under an hour. Murcia is the next option at about 130 km, and Alicante is the furthest at around 200 km, so check which one your flight lands at before booking your pickup point.
The Costa de Almeria runs north and south of Mojacar, so most drives are short. Almeria city is about 90 km away, roughly an hour by car, with its Alcazaba fortress and an easier base for evenings out. Vera and its long blue-flag beach are a short hop just north, and Roquetas de Mar, the larger resort beyond Almeria, is around an hour and a quarter down the coast.
Closer to home, the white village of Garrucha and its fishing port sit minutes up the coast, and the Cabo de Gata natural park is within easy reach for coves and quiet beaches. One pickup in Mojacar reaches all of them and you can be back the same evening.
Quick checks at pickup
Most car hire for Mojacar is collected at Almeria Airport, where the desks and the cheapest rates are. Rental companies there include Europcar, Hertz and Goldcar. Through our search you can compare Goldcar, Centauro and Europcar in one go. Some suppliers also deliver to your accommodation in Mojacar Playa - useful if you would rather not drive straight after a flight. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Mojacar Pueblo sits 175 metres up on the hillside, and its lanes are a maze of cobbled, one-way streets not built for cars. Park in the car parks below the village and walk up, rather than trying to drive into the centre. Mojacar Playa along the seafront is flatter and easier, with roadside and car-park spaces near the beach bars.
Almeria province has no low-emission zone to worry about, so a hire car can drive anywhere along this coast without extra paperwork. Cars rented in Spain carry the DGT environmental sticker as standard.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter roads and a sea still warm enough to swim in autumn. Almeria borders the Tabernas desert, which is why the climate stays so warm here, and winters are mild, so a car still makes sense out of season for the coast and inland villages. July and August are the peak: prices climb, and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so book several weeks ahead.
About 90 km, or roughly a 50-minute drive. It is the A-7 motorway the whole way, with no tolls and little traffic, so it is an easy run straight from the airport to the beach.
You can reach the edge, but the old village is a maze of steep, narrow one-way streets. Park in the car parks below and walk up.
Mojacar Playa on the seafront is flat and far easier for parking.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Cross-border trips must be agreed with the supplier in advance. There may be a small service fee and extra insurance.
To see cars allowed across the border, use the filter option or contact our support team. Do not cross the border undeclared.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Mojacar and return in Almeria or Murcia.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Spain. Automatics cost more and sell out first, especially in summer, so book one early if you need it - it makes the climb up to the pueblo easier.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
