Badajoz is the largest city in Extremadura, standing on the banks of the Guadiana river at the Portuguese border. Its frontier position has shaped a long and turbulent history — the Moorish alcazaba, the 13th-century cathedral, and the old town reward a day's exploration. Renting a car here opens up Extremadura's wider attractions: the Roman ruins at Mérida are 60 kilometres east and the Portuguese city of Évora is just 80 kilometres west via the A-6 motorway. Seville Airport, 200 kilometres south, is the most practical major hub.
Credit card or deposit
Most rentals require a credit card for the security hold. Debit cards are accepted on no-deposit rates — select that option when searching on the site.

The city centre has a paid blue-zone system on working days. Public car parks near the Paseo de San Francisco and the market area are reliable options. Residential neighbourhoods offer free street parking.
The A-5 motorway connects Badajoz to Madrid (about 4 hours) and to Cáceres to the north. The Portuguese A-6 continues west to Lisbon in under 2 hours. Mérida is 60 km east on the A-5. Petrol stations at all main road junctions on the city outskirts.
