Javea spreads across three separate parts - the old town inland, the port, and the Arenal beach - with a couple of kilometres between each. There is no metro and the local bus is limited, so a hire car is what lets you move between the three and reach the coves beyond the Cap de la Nao without waiting on a timetable.
Javea also has no train station and no airport of its own. It sits in the Marina Alta region, north of Alicante and south of Valencia, between two international airports. Most car rental in Javea therefore starts at one of those airports, or with a local company that delivers the car to your accommodation.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
You have two practical options. The first is airport pickup: the drive from Alicante airport takes about an hour, costing little in fuel, while Valencia is about a 90 minute drive on the toll-free A-7 to Junction 62 for Ondara, Denia and Javea. The second is a local Javea pickup or door-to-door delivery, which suits you if you are staying put for a few days first and do not want to pay for a car sitting idle.
Big-name suppliers sit at both airports rather than in the town - compare desks like Goldcar and Centauro at Alicante or Valencia, then drive across. Whichever you choose, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
The northern Costa Blanca packs short drives. Denia is the closest, about 7 miles and under 20 minutes by road, with its castle and the ferry port for the Balearic Islands. Calpe is part of a roughly 73 km coastal run south, around 30 minutes away, where the Ifach rock marks the skyline. Alicante itself is about an hour south for the city and the airport.
Closer to home, the Cap de la Nao lighthouse and the coves like Granadella sit at the end of narrow lanes south of the port - the sort of spots a bus will not take you to. That is the real reason to rent here.
Quick checks at pickup
Javea has no low-emission zone, so there are no camera restrictions on driving into the centre - a contrast with Valencia city, where a ZBE now applies. The thing to watch instead is car size: the streets in Javea's old town are quite narrow, so a smaller car is much easier to park there, even if a bigger one is comfier for family trips. Park at the Arenal or the port and walk in if you are in a 7-seater.
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September into October) are the easiest times to drive - warm, with quieter coast roads and water still warm enough to swim in autumn. July and August are the peak: prices climb and the coves fill up, so the early start matters. Book early, because 7 and 9-seater cars are in limited supply and most requested over Easter and the summer months between June and September. Winter is the cheapest stretch and a car still earns its keep for the inland villages and the Jalon valley once the beach season ends.
Javea has no airport or train station of its own. Most people collect at Alicante airport (about an hour south) or Valencia airport (about 90 minutes north on the toll-free A-7).
You can also arrange a local Javea pickup or door-to-door delivery to your accommodation.

A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
