Castro Urdiales is a picturesque fishing port on the eastern Cantabrian coast, known for its imposing Gothic church of Santa María built on a dramatic headland overlooking the harbour. The old town has Basque-influenced stone architecture, seafood restaurants on the waterfront, and a small but pretty beach. Its position on the A-8 motorway places it perfectly between Bilbao (35 km east) and Santander (65 km west), making it an excellent base for exploring the Cantabrian and Basque coasts. Bilbao Airport is about 40 minutes away.

There is a public car park near the harbour and old town. Street parking in the centre is limited and can be busy in summer. The road up to the church area has some free spaces out of season.
The A-8 motorway gives direct access to Bilbao in 35 minutes east and Santander in about one hour west. San Sebastián is 1h30 east. The coastal road through Laredo and Santoña to Santander is scenic. Petrol stations on the A-8 and at the town access roads.
