Paying for car hire in Spain by card

On a standard rate, Spanish rental companies want a credit card in the main driver's name and block a deposit on it - often a few hundred to over a thousand euros - which they release after you return the car. Debit cards are usually refused on these rates. The way around both the credit-card rule and the deposit is a no-deposit rate with full insurance included: nothing is held on your card, and a debit card is accepted.

How the deposit works

A deposit is not a payment - it is a hold. The company freezes an amount on your credit card for the duration of the rental as security against damage, fuel or fines, then releases it when the car comes back in order. The size depends on the car: small for an economy hatchback, large for a van or a premium model. The catch is that a hold ties up part of your credit limit for the whole trip, and debit cards are usually not accepted for it because the money would leave your account rather than just be reserved.

No credit card? Book a no-deposit rate

If you do not have a credit card, or simply do not want a hold on it, choose a rate that includes full insurance with no deposit. The price is a little higher per day, but nothing is blocked, small damage is already covered, and a debit card is accepted. It is the simplest answer to renting in Spain without a credit card.

Card rules to know

  • Name must match - the card has to be in the main driver's name, not a partner's.
  • Physical card - bring the card itself; phone wallets are often not accepted for the deposit.
  • No prepaid or virtual cards - these are refused for deposits even when a normal debit card would do.
  • Enough headroom - the hold needs to fit within your available credit limit.

Paying by card - common questions

Can I rent a car in Spain without a credit card?+
Yes - book a no-deposit rate with full insurance included. Nothing is held on your card and a debit card is accepted. On standard rates a credit card is required.
Can I use a debit card?+
On a no-deposit rate, yes. On a standard rate with a deposit, debit cards are usually refused because the hold cannot be placed on them.
How big is the deposit?+
It depends on the car - from a few hundred euros for an economy car to over a thousand for a van or premium model. It is released after you return the car undamaged.
Does the card have to be in my name?+
Yes. It must be in the main driver's name. A card belonging to a partner or friend will be refused even if they are present.
