Mahón (Maó in Catalan) is the capital of Menorca and home to one of the largest natural harbours in the world, a deep inlet that gave the island strategic importance for centuries. The compact old town perches on high cliffs above the port, lined with Georgian-influenced architecture — a legacy of 18th-century British rule. Menorca Airport is immediately adjacent to the city, making Mahón the most convenient pick-up point on the island. The entire island is reachable within 45 minutes by car.

The city has paid underground and surface car parks in the centre. Street parking in the old town is restricted and limited in summer. Free parking is more available in the newer residential areas.
The Me-1 main road runs the full length of the island from Mahón to Ciutadella in about 45 minutes. All of Menorca's beaches, including Cala Galdana, are within 30–40 minutes. Petrol stations on the outskirts of Mahón and along the Me-1.
