Car rental in Cala d'Or for the east coast coves - Cala Mondrago, Cala Figuera, Portocolom - most of which have no bus service.
Sample prices for a 7-day rental. Final price, deposit and terms are confirmed on Localrent.
No-deposit options
About a third of cars in Spain come with no deposit hold at pickup - look for the "No deposit" badge.
Full insurance
Zero-excess cover available on most cars - nothing taken from the deposit if something happens.
Airport & city pickup
Desks at the airport and in the city centre.
Free cancellation
Cancel free on most bookings, often up to 48 hours before pickup.
The roads here are narrow and parking is tight in the centre, so most people pick small and only size up for a group. Choose by who is travelling and how far you are driving.
Economy
Cheap to run and the easiest to park near the marina. Fine for two staying in town.
Automatic
Less effort on the roundabouts in and out of town. Automatics are limited on the island, so book early.
7-seater & van
For families or two couples sharing, with boot space for the airport run from Palma.
Luxury
A step up for the longer drives across the island. Deposits run higher on premium groups.
Cala d'Or sits on the southeast coast of Mallorca, about an hour and 60 km from Palma and the airport. Cala d'Or to Palma airport is approximately 60km, around an hour's drive, though an airport transfer bus can take closer to two hours depending on stops. That gap is the first reason to rent: a car turns a two-hour bus into a one-hour drive on your own schedule.
In town itself you can manage without a car. Two land-train routes run around the area - the yellow line towards Cala Ferrera and the blue towards Cala Egos and Es Forti - either as a hop-on hop-off at EUR 2.50 per person or a full tour. The real value of car rental in Cala d'Or is reaching the quieter beaches and the rest of the southeast that buses and the mini-train do not cover.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The town's own calas - Cala Gran, Cala Ferrera, Cala Esmeralda and the rest - fill up fast in summer. When space runs out, it pays to drive to a natural beach nearby, such as S'Amarador or Cala Sa Nau north of the town. Cala Sa Nau lies about 4 km northeast, while S'Amarador and Ses Fonts de n'Alis are about 5 km southwest in the Mondrago nature preserve.
Mondrago Natural Park is the closest proper escape. It sits on the coast about 2 km southwest of Cala d'Or, with the beaches of S'Amarador and Cala Mondrago. A few minutes further round the coast you have the working fishing village of Cala Figuera and the gold-stone market town of Santanyi, the next municipality inland.
For a longer day out, the Coves de Drach and Coves de Hams near Porto Cristo are about half an hour's drive from Cala d'Or. Palma and its cathedral are an hour west the other way. The wider island - the Tramuntana mountains, Valldemossa, Soller - is a full day from here, which is exactly why a car earns its keep over a fixed excursion bus.
Quick checks at pickup
Parking in Cala d'Or is straightforward away from the busy central streets, and the beach areas have car parks. Road traffic in town runs through a series of numbered roundabouts, so it is easy to follow once you know your entrance - roundabout 1 from the north, roundabout 11 from Portopetro to the west.
The one zone to know about is in Palma, not here. Palma's Low Emission Zone (ZBE) covers the old town, bordered by the inner ring road and the Paseo Maritimo. Hire cars are not hit by it - the restrictions target older, polluting vehicles and foreign plates that need online registration. A car rented in Spain already carries the correct DGT label, so the category is assigned automatically; just check the windscreen before you leave the lot. If you also plan to visit Soller, note it now runs its own low-emission zone in the historic centre, so park on the edge of town.
May and June bring long days and quieter roads, July and August are the busiest for beach time, and September into October keep a warm sea with the island much quieter. The shoulder months are the easiest to drive and the cheapest to book. In July and August, prices climb and automatics and 7-seaters go first, so reserve several weeks ahead. Mallorca has no toll roads, so driving is free across the island whenever you come.
Around 60 km, about an hour's drive heading east on the Ma-19 and then towards Santanyi.
A transfer bus can take closer to two hours with stops, which is the main reason many visitors collect a car instead.
Yes. A car rented in Spain already carries the DGT environmental sticker the zone requires, so it can enter freely.
The restrictions and fines target older, non-compliant private cars and foreign plates, not your rental. Check the windscreen sticker at pickup.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
It depends on the car class and the supplier - you can see the exact amount on each car's card.
You can set a maximum deposit in the filter and the catalogue shows only matching offers. The lower you set it, the fewer cars remain.
Yes. To see cars with no deposit, use the «No deposit» filter option. There are also cars with a small deposit or cash payment.
Note that "no deposit" means no hold at pickup, not no booking payment - a small upfront amount is still taken when you book. If nothing suits, contact our support team.
The deposit is the amount frozen on your card at pickup and released when you return the car undamaged.
The excess is the part of any damage you pay yourself even with insurance - anything above it is covered by the insurer.
In practice, damage is taken from the deposit up to the excess, so the deposit is often set to match it. A full, zero-excess policy removes both: you do not pay for damage and the hold is usually waived.
Cover comes in levels:
You see the available rates on each car's card when booking.
If you would rather not depend on the deposit and excess, choose the full rate.
Yes, some cars can be paid in cash - use the «Cash» filter option.
You pay a small upfront amount by debit or credit card when booking (usually 15-20% of the total), and the rest in cash at pickup.
Yes, paying for the car with cryptocurrency is possible - contact our support team to arrange it.
Taking the car by ferry to Menorca, Ibiza or the mainland must be agreed with the supplier in advance, and not all of them allow it.
It is often simpler to hire a separate car on the second island. If you plan a ferry, check the terms with our support team.
Yes. In the search, set a pick-up and a drop-off point - for example collect in Cala d'Or and return in Palma or at the airport.
By default the car is returned to the same place you collected it.
Most are manual, as across Mallorca. Automatics are available but in shorter supply and cost more, so book one early if you need it, especially in July and August.
You need a passport, a driving licence and the rental voucher - the voucher can be shown on your phone or tablet.
It states the final price with your chosen options and insurance, so the amount due at the desk will not change.
To hire through our rental companies you need at least 2 years of driving experience.
