Puerto del Carmen is the main resort on Lanzarote, with a 6km seafront and the Avenida de las Playas strip you can walk end to end. For the resort itself you do not need a car. The value of car hire in Puerto del Carmen is reaching the rest of the island on your own schedule instead of waiting for a bus or paying for a guided tour.
The island is small. You can drive from north to south in around 45 minutes, so a single base in Puerto del Carmen reaches everything Lanzarote has and gets you back the same day.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.

Drives from Puerto del Carmen
To go further north or south you usually pass through or near Arrecife, the capital. Parking there is the tightest on the island, so use a car park rather than circling for a street space.
There are no toll roads in Lanzarote, so once you have fuel there are no extra charges beyond it. The main roads linking Puerto del Carmen, Arrecife and Playa Blanca are wide and in good condition; only a few northern roads to viewpoints are narrow.
The one caveat worth getting right is the unpaved roads. The track to Papagayo can be bumpy, so drive slowly, and check your rental agreement, as some companies prohibit unpaved routes. If you plan to reach Papagayo, photograph the car at pickup and confirm whether your cover applies off the asphalt.
Quick checks at pickup
You can collect a car in Puerto del Carmen itself, including at the seaport just minutes from the resort centre. Many visitors instead pick up at Lanzarote Airport (ACE), which sits about 7 miles and roughly 12 minutes by road from Puerto del Carmen, where the choice is widest. Either way, an no-deposit rate with full cover built in avoids a deposit hold.
Lanzarote stays warm and dry year-round, so there is no off-season for driving. The difference is price and availability. Quieter months like May, June and October bring much cheaper rates than July or August, when economy cars and automatics sell out first. Whenever you come, booking a week or two ahead is where the savings are, and renting for the whole stay usually works out cheaper per day than a day at a time.
No. There are no toll roads on the island, so beyond fuel there are no extra charges. The only fee you might pay is the small entrance for the unpaved track to the Papagayo beaches.
You can, but the access is an unpaved track that is bumpy, so drive slowly. Check your rental agreement first - some companies do not cover damage on unpaved roads. An SUV makes the drive more comfortable if it is on your plan.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
