Playa Blanca sits at the southern tip of Lanzarote, which makes it the furthest resort from the airport and from most of the island's sights. Without a car you rely on the local bus or taxis, and the day trips that draw people here - Timanfaya, the Papagayo beaches, the wine country - are awkward to reach any other way. That is where car rental in Playa Blanca pays off.
Lanzarote is a small island, and on a good traffic day it takes a little over an hour to drive from Playa Blanca in the south west to Orzola at the northern tip. So one pickup genuinely covers the whole island, and you can be back at your hotel the same evening.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The big sights cluster in the centre and north of the island, so most drives start by heading up the LZ-2 out of town.
Day trips by car
This is the Playa Blanca-specific trip the other resorts cannot match. The port is in the centre of town, and the crossing to Corralejo on Fuerteventura usually takes around 29 minutes, with the fastest ferry getting there in 25 minutes. The first sailing leaves at roughly 06:50 and the last around 20:00, though schedules vary by operator and season.
You can take your hire car across - most Playa Blanca to Corralejo ferries have car decks for vehicles. Two points to get right: tell your rental supplier before you book, as crossing to another island is not always allowed by default, and if you are travelling with a vehicle, arrive at the port about 1.5 hours before departure. Foot passengers can park at the harbour and hire a car on Fuerteventura instead, which often works out simpler.
Lanzarote is easy to drive. There are no tolls on the island, and the main roads are the LZ-1 and LZ-2 linking Arrecife to the north and south, plus the LZ-67 past Timanfaya. There is no low-emission zone anywhere on the island, so a hire car can go where you like with no extra paperwork.
Two things to watch. There are fixed speed cameras on the LZ-2 between Playa Blanca and Arrecife, so keep to the limit on that long, open stretch. You will also meet more cyclists than on most roads, often riding side by side, so wait for a clear stretch before overtaking. Parking is rarely a problem - most attractions have free parking for visitors.
Playa Blanca is warm and dry all year, so there is no bad season for a car. The island averages around 18 rainy days a year, with hot summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for the Timanfaya walks and the longer drives north, with quieter roads. July and August are the peak: prices climb and automatics and 7-seaters sell out first, so book several weeks ahead. Winter stays mild and cheap, and a car still makes sense for the sights once the beach plan loosens up.
