Jandia sits at the southern tip of Fuerteventura, the resort strip and the long Playas de Jandia running down to the fishing town of Morro Jable. You can walk the promenade and reach the main beach without a car, but the peninsula's best spots sit at the end of roads no bus serves. Public transport options are limited in this area, making a rental car the most convenient way to access remote attractions and scenic drives. That is the real value of car rental in Jandia.
Payment and deposit
When you book you pay only a small upfront amount - usually 15-20% of the hire cost. The rest is settled at the desk on pickup. The deposit in most cases is fully refundable, and about a third of cars in Spain are handed over with no deposit at all - those are marked in the results. If you only have a debit card, pick a no-deposit rate or a cash-deposit option: nothing gets frozen on your card.
The east coast is the easy driving. Playa del Matorral is the main beach here, stretching eastwards for over 4 kilometres from Morro Jable. North up the FV-2, Sotavento and its windsurf lagoons are around 15 minutes, with Costa Calma about the same distance again.
The Cofete side is the reason many people rent at all. Cofete Beach is on the southern appendix of Fuerteventura, more than 12 kilometres long and protected by the crests of the Jandia Natural Park. Off the track is the access road for the isolated Cofete beach on the west coast, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for travelling along this route.
For the southern tip, the track is asphalted in a small stretch to the cemetery, then splits, with the left branch running to Punta de Jandia, about an hour from Morro Jable. The rest of Fuerteventura is a day trip too, but each town.
The Cofete road - read before you book
There is no low-emission zone on the Jandia peninsula, so no sticker rules to worry about here - the ZBE schemes apply to mainland cities, not this part of Fuerteventura. In Morro Jable and Jandia, parking is generally available near beaches, hotels and shopping areas. The main road in and out is the FV-2, which runs the length of the island north towards the airport and the capital.
One rule that catches UK visitors: Spanish drink-driving laws are stricter than in the UK, and police carry out random breathalyser tests. Stick to soft drinks if you are the one driving back from a long beach lunch.
The south is dry and warm year round, which is why it draws a winter crowd when northern Europe is cold. Prices and demand for cars climb over the winter sun season and the school holidays, and automatics and 7-seaters go first - book several weeks ahead for those. Spring and autumn are quieter on the roads and on the beaches. Whenever you come, the wind is a constant on this peninsula, so the lagoons at Sotavento and the sheltered east-coast bays are the reliable swimming spots.
Not strictly. The road to Cofete is an unpaved mountain track, and a normal car can manage it if driven slowly and carefully.
The catch is that many rental contracts ban unpaved roads, so check your terms - an SUV with higher ground clearance is the safer choice if you plan to go.
No. Fuerteventura has no city low-emission zone like the mainland, so a hire car can drive anywhere on the island, including Morro Jable and the resorts, with no extra paperwork.
A credit card is not always required - it is needed to hold the security deposit. At pickup the supplier freezes the deposit amount on the card: the money is not charged and is released when you return the car undamaged.
Without a credit card you still have options: choose a cash-payment rate (the «Cash» filter option) or a no-deposit rate, and nothing is held.
The deposit is an amount the rental company holds as a guarantee for the car. Road fines or damage can be deducted from it.
If the car comes back without problems, the deposit is released in full. It is a temporary hold on your card, not a charge.
